Chance me for Princeton, Brown.

Hey guys hows it going. The first time i set foot on Princeton campus i immediately fell in love with the school. I talked to a few students about the school and they said they loved it. I was 7 years old at the time and on campus for a hockey game.

Now im a junior in High School and im starting to get serious about college, especially Princeton, Brown, or any other high end institution.

I am currently enrolled at a prestigious and very competitive Catholic High School (Christian Brothers Academy) in NJ. Ethnic Background: White male, Irish/Scottish. I am in the top 10% of my school with high hopes for college.

My Classes: Freshman Year: Spanish 1-A, Honors World History-A, English 1-A, Communications-A, Biology-A, Algebra 1-A, and Religion-A.

Sophmore Year: Spanish 2 Honors-A, U.S. History 1 Honors-A, English 2/American Literature-A, Honors Computer Programming-A, Chemistry-A, Geometry-A, and Morality class-A.

Junior Year: Spanish 3 Honors-A, AP U.S./European History-A, English 3/British Literature-A, Physics-B, Trigonometry/Algebra 2-A, and Honors Theological Study-A.

Senior Year: Spanish 4 Honors, AP European History, AP Literature/English 4, AP Psychology, AP Writing and Composition, and Pre-calculus.

I am also enrolled in a summer reading program for credits, a Service Program for each year of High School, a Health class (physical health, Mental health/drivers ed, College advice), and lastly Physical Education for all years.

Extra Currics:
6+ years of Community Service: Just4kix program, My pride and joy. In this program we are asigned a young child 4-8 years old who has a mental Handicap. My child's name is Kyron and i love him to death. Also various other Community Service gigs.

Member of the Debate Team/Moch Trial (no leaders in this club).
Member of the Academic Team (also no leaders).
Plan on being a member of Future Buisness leaders as well as Model UN.
Christian Service Group.

I have been playing hockey for about 13 years. Both roller and ice hockey but the majority has been Ice. (My passion). Co-coach of my father's ice hockey team (number of years). I attend long distance tournaments every year with my teams and my fathers.

Independant studies on WWII, History, and some law studies.

Numerous academic awards, and community service awards. Physics competitions-won 2 out of 3.

Im sure im forgetting a few things but thats the majority.

I currently have a 3.7 GPA, hoping for an 1850 on SAT, which i know is horrible (going to be bringing it up), and will most likely take SAT IIs in History, and Literature.

I want to go into a law field for my major as law has been my passion for many years. I am also in love with any form of History and writing. My Extra Currics reflect my love of law.

Anyway I really really want to get into Princeton, or any other "high up there" colleges. I know im no super human but its my dream. Any replies would be great and if you have any questions please ask. Thanks guys.

Honestly, you seem very cut and dry for an ivy applicant, especially for Princeton. The only things I can see giving you a slight edge are ice hockey and your 6 years of community service, for one organization.

Yea i know im a bit dry, i have defining characters, i love to write and argue to prove a point. Hockey is my thing, love playing and have been since the age of 4-5. Oh, and its not just one organization ive been doing for 6 years haha, i also do a bunch of runs for cancers, and to raise funds for kids and students. Ive done those for years, same ones every year. Ive also done the same gig for about 4 years where i load up food from a supermarket to send to the homeless. I also have a service which i located at a church in NJ. We make christmas dinners and thanksgiving dinners for the homeless/poor and hand them out. I also handle spanish speaking people during those occurances as i speak fluent spanish.

As ive mentioned i want so much to go to Princeton, ive been mesmerized with it and the ivy leagues from childhood. But if you have any other suggestions for school please feel free to point them out. Thanks again guys. Thanks Poseidenj

I think you would need something like 2250+ on SAT.

It seems to me you want to go to an Ivy League school for no reason other than it being an Ivy League school, which is a bad idea. Pick a school not based on its brand name, but on whether or not it’s good for you as a person.

Of course an ivy school naturally draws me in, but i am only interested in 2 ivies, Princeton (ive been there and love it) and Brown (dont know too much about). Brown i know has good law programs. I know my SAT score is pretty bad, im going to work on it alot. I had done no studying for the first test so. Anyway thanks for replies. Anyone else?

your passion in hockey will help alot, you actually do have a chance if you increase ur SAT scores and write really i mean outstanding essays. U never know what happens
Good luck :)

thanks for the positive post it gives me hope. Anyone else? =)

Your SAT kills you. Sorry, but an unhooked applicant is just not going to get into any ivy with a <2000 SAT.

Bring that up and you’ll have a shot.

I’m going to work hard on the sat problem, any tips on how to do that? Keep posting opinions please.

Check out the SAT Prep forum for advice.

Simply: practice, practice, practice.

I recommend giving the Xiggi Method a try: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sat-preparation/68210-xiggis-sat-prep-advice-39.html

thanks for the link,I’m sure it will help. Any other thoughts on the original post?

I didnt put this above but i have some personal stories i could talk about as well. A few years back i saved a 3 year old child who slipped and fell into a pool. I dived in and got him out (he sank to the bottom). His parents were very greatful, and i was too considering things could have went a lot worse.

The Just4kix progam im in has a million stories. My child Kyron has a form of autism and is very antisocial. I went in there with my doubts my first year but since then he has made tremendous improvements. He now talks to people, can remember things more clearly, knows how to kick a soccer ball, can go through any obstacle course you throw at him and looks at you when you speak to him/pays attention. These seem like very small things but people underestimate how hard it is for these children to do such things.

A funny one that dosnt involve saving a life: In the bio lab one morning at my school we had our 6 1/2 corn snakes out on a table. One got very angry as a result of a camera flash and bit a freshmans hand (drew blood) the kid flipped out. No one knew what to do, so i came over and removed the snake from his hand (pinching their head down is the trick). Didnt save his life but he was greatful haha.

Not to boast but i have other things i can talk about that set me aside as a person.

Sounds like Kyron might be a good essay topic.

But seriously: adcomms have heard it all before. While these might seem unique, they’re really not. Don’t depend on them to alleviate your SAT score.

Good luck!

I figure its worth something in my essay. I hope to bring SATs to at LEAST a 2000. And thanks Kam for your input. Anyway, continue posing i like hearing peoples opinions/advice. Oh and Kam where do/did you go to school?

Oh, I’m still in high school. :P

So take my words with a grain of salt.

Thanks anyway Kam, encouraging words.

Glad to help!

Just get that SAT score up and you’re good.

Good luck!
