Prospective Majors: Engineering, Applied Math

Please chance me for the three schools:

MIT (RD)
Columbia (RD)
Harvard or Princeton (SCEA)

Top Choices are MIT, Columbia (cc), and I can dream too.

I'm also considering other top choices:

Caltech
U Chicago
Stanford
UC Berkeley
Cornell
WashU
U Penn
Duke
University of Michigan
NYU
Georgia Tech and other safeties.

I didn’t fully understand what you meant about your status with regard to international versus domestic, but if you are a non-aid seeking international I would recommend applying ED to Columbia - given your stats (and assuming good letters/essays) I would say your chances are better then 70% for admissions: they get relatively few good math students every year. MIT is more difficult, but USAMO should give you a shot, perhaps 30% if you’re a domestic applicant and maybe 10% if international. Harvard and Princeton tend to draw most of their math kids from the MOP pool though, and because they are need-blind not needing aid doesn’t throw you in the domestic pool, so it’s a long shot at either one - I call probable rejection.

Your best bet is Columbia ED coupled with MIT EA if you really like both schools that much.

Sniper knows exactly what he is talking about, I would ED colombia if I was in your position.

Sent from my SGH-T959V using CC App

Sorry man your SAT is too low

You have great chances for all colleges in the U.S.

Just make your essay extra-freaking-extraordinary… and make the application look tasty and you will get in without a doubt

If MIT is a top choice, why not apply EA to that? Same with columbia (although it’s ED so if you’re undecided, don’t do that.) USAMO gives you a good chance at MIT, and caltech as well.

Probably 90% to MIT, but the rest are tossups. Stanford is probably likely too, they like USAMO people.

What are my chances for RD: MIT, Columbia, Caltech, Stanford, UPenn, U Chicago
I want to do Harvard/Princeton early just to risk it and hope.

I think you have good chances at HYPSMCCCP because of USAMO, USAPHO and AIME scores.

(I cannot believe I just said that.)

There is smart risk, and there is dumb risk. The admit rate for international students at Harvard and Princeton is less then 1%…and a very large chunk of those are olympiad winners, children of very powerful people (The current premier of China’s daughter is currently an undergrad at Harvard) or people with suitably extraordinary hooks. Not needing financial aid does not help you here, either - Harvard, MIT and Princeton are need blind, so you’re competing directly against all the dirt poor and brilliant Chinese IMO medalists that have families making $1000/year, with no advantage accorded whatsoever by virtue of your ability to pay. Your chances EA at those schools are maybe 5%.

Nevertheless, assuming an RD application, international status, and no financial aid:

MIT - 5%
Columbia 15%
Caltech 30%
Stanford - 10%
UPenn - 15%
U Chicago - 70%

I did not see that you are an international applicant.
That will change the story little bit.

U Chicago does not have engineering.
U Chicago: Good chances (No FA) but not 70%

damn, snipersas. I can’t get into any of my favorite schools if I apply regular. I wish I had a citizenship at US. Is it better that I’m canadian citizen?

Let’s say ea/ed on those schools.

I checked on both Harvard and Princeton and on their website, they say international students are considered in the same pool. YAY. And I’m pretty sure Columbia, Caltech, UPenn give preference to financial aid.

Btw, thanks everyone!!!

@sniper, I don’t understand what percentage are supposed to mean and I rather prefer reach, target, safety style, but thanks too! (and I also don’t think <1% get in HYP since MIT is the lowest at 4% :stuck_out_tongue: )

I’m also applying these school: (they are not really my favorites but I like them a lot too)
UC Berkeley
Cornell
WashU
Northwestern
Duke
University of Michigan
NYU
Georgia Tech
Tufts

You’re Canadian? That changes things - Canadians are generally considered domestics for most purposes in college admissions.

UC Berkeley: In
Cornell: Great Chances
WashU: WL > In
Northwestern: Great Chances
Duke: Very good chances
University of Michigan: IN
NYU:In
Georgia Tech: In
Tufts: WL > In

I don’t think you have to worry about these schools. You will get into some of HYPSMCCCP.
