My essay is about how I used to hate visiting my grandfather because he has no modern technology. It was only after his death that I realized I had been blinded by 21st century material possesions. My AP lit teacher said it was an excellent essay and she said she praised it more than she typically praises an essay....

Your SAT and EC’s are spectacular. I think you’re in!

I would say you have a pretty high chance. definitely not definite since it is duke but very impressive SAT and ECs overall.

duke rejects a ton of people with great stats and test scores. i think you are lacking in the leadership area, and from your post i can’t tell if you’ve made an impact in your school or community in any way. Why would Duke want you? How do you stand out? If you don’t show them that, then I’d say deferred or rejected.

asiandukiepookie,

While I truly appreciate your comments, I feel I must rebuttal (being the defensive person I am).

“i can’t tell if you’ve made an impact in your school or community in any way”
I would hope that Duke would see that I have made an impact through my extensive Eagle project, hours of tutoring, service in a community hospital, etc.

“i think you are lacking in the leadership area”
I forgot to mention that I have been a patrol leader (2 terms), and assistant senior patrol leader (2 terms).

I do realize that Duke rejects people with great stats, we will just see how the pieces fall.

I think you’re a competitor, but one can never know for sure. Looks like some extremely qualified students were rejected ED…

Nothing is seriously lacking, but never its a clear “YOU’RE IN” at duke either… hard to predict

FYI youre into BC and URichmond.

ps chance me!! some similar schools!! http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/dartmouth-college/826950-chance-rd-please.html

I like your chances given your grades, boards, and ECs. I would find the Guttentag interview posted in this forum and listen to that while you did your homework or something - they are looking for the best students who are fits for Duke, and this video elucidates what exactly they are looking for. I’m confident you have the qualities, just make sure you “package” them the right way.

i suggest then, that you should focus one of your essays on an activity or experience that demonstrates your impact and/or leadership (like your eagle project, or your growth as a patrol leader, etc…). i just feel like writing an essay about “how I used to hate visiting my grandfather because he has no modern technology. It was only after his death that I realized I had been blinded by 21st century material possesions” doesn’t tell the admissions officers much about who you are or what your strengths are.

likely rejected–RD pool is brutal

“i suggest then, that you should focus one of your essays on an activity or experience that demonstrates your impact and/or leadership”

asiandukiepookie.

Aren’t essays about leadership extremely overused. I read a book about writing college essays and essays about “leading a group” are dangerous to use. This is the reason I chose to do the one about my grandfather. I hope my essay DOES tell the admission committees more about me, specifically that I’ve set my priorities more in line, and I can respect other lifestyles, etc… As for telling the committee what my strenghts are, hopefully my application does that itself.

i think your essay sounds unique and interesting… I would agree that a leadership essay can come across as overused and braggadocios. Hopefully a recommendation will mention your leadership qualities.

“I read a book about writing college essays and essays about “leading a group” are dangerous to use.”

Well, it worked for me. However, mine was more about a specific experience that led to my growth and maturity into becoming a leader.

You don’t have to write about leadership or impact. Leadership is just an example one of the many qualities you can write about, and impact is just usually something hard to see just on a resume itself.

I mean it’s up to you. I haven’t read your grandfather essay, but if you think it will show Duke what you want them to know about you, then definitely go for it.

u have a pretty decent chance
( not getting rejection but getting deffred will be a small boost for u, i guess )

since u knw u are a capable for dartmouth and so u will be for the rest

Best of luck ;)

asiandukiepookie,

instead of writing an essay, I’m going to get a letter of recommendation from my scoutmaster. I think this will profile my leadership skills and the impact I have made on my scouting, town communities through scouts.

bumpppppppppppppppppppppppp

bump10char

I think asiandukeipookie is a little up on her high horse after getting in to duke. Yeah, we get it, good job - it doesn’t make you the authority on what Duke wants.
