Chance me for Rice, Duke, Northwestern, Michigan

Hey guys,

I was applying to a bunch of good pre-med colleges as a biology or biological sciences major.

I want to minor in some sort of global or public health.

ACT (one-sitting): 34
Superscore: 35
Top 6% of class
Unweighted: 4.0 out of 4.0
Asian Female

SAT Bio: 770
SAT Chem: 780
SAT Math Level 2: 800

AP Biology: 4
AP Physics 1: 4
AP Chemistry: 5

National Finalist for Chemistry Olympiad
Won an Essay Contest to advocate education for poor kids
Was Part of Varsity Golf for Two years and won the Coaches and Scholar Athlete Award for Golf

Hospital Volunteering: 150 hours, still continuing

Shadowing: 40 hours

Research: Researched a popular disease at New Jersey Medical School with a biomedical team

I have strong essays (both common app and supplemental) and have a bunch of clubs and honors societies with 3+ leadership positions.

I have great recommendation letters and some ECs that I did not mention here that are really unique. For example, I am a part of the official Akhil Autism Foundation (out of school) and did my own awareness events for them.

With all this effort, do you guys think that I have a shot at getting into Rice.

I know Rice is really competitive with kids with 1550s and 5 on AP Bio and numerous clubs and leadership positions, while I only had like 3. Also, I only took 3 APs, but its mostly because I chose which AP classes to pursue and I was passionate about science and I concentrated on those.

Do I have a good chance Rice as a regular decision applicant? Rice is in the top colleges of USA. What about my chances at Duke or Rochester or Boston or Wash U at St. Louis or Emory or UNC Chapel Hill? These are the other colleges I am applying to. I want to study Pre-Med, but I also want to get the whole college experience.

CHANCE ME! THANK YOU GUYS!

What state are you from? All of the schools you list are very selective. Did you apply to any safety schools?

@Houston1021 NJ. No, these are my main schools, I guess my only other safety is UVA.

And UVA is no safety either for OOS.

Your likely safety is Rutgers.

Rochester and BU could be match schools given GPA/test scores. Although if your school offers more APs and you took only 3, that would not be good for class rigor since most of your peers would have demonstrated success in both STEM and non-STEM courses.

You only make the shots you attempt. Dream big and you will get into one of those institutions. Good luck.

You have very good stats. However, Rice is not a safety school for anyone. This year there is likely to be a spike in RD applications because of Rice’s new financial aid initiative. There was already a spike in ED applications which were up by 39%.

You have a reasonable to well above average chance of admission to all of your targeted schools. But, Duke is tough regardless of one’s numbers. UNC-Chapel Hill is tough as well for non-resident applicants.

WashUStL & Emory crave demonstrated interest. Rice is competitive & experiencing a surge in applications. If you want Rice, you should have applied ED to increase your odds.

University of Rochester & the University of Michigan are matches for you, although likely to be offered admission to Michigan if an in-state applicant.

Although I think that you should do well, you could experience multiple rejections or waitlists because stellar academics & standardized test scores just are not enough to assure an invitation.

For a better assessment of your chances, it would be wise to indicate whether you are a resident or non-resident applicant to any state public schools.

@Publisher I am an out of state resident for all of these colleges; I am from NJ. How much does that lower my chances. Rice and Tufts and Duke are definitely reaches for me, but do you think I am competitive for UMichigan or Emory?

Yes, you are competitive for admission to Michigan & Emory, as well as UNC. But UNC is tough for non-residents.

@Publisher Yes, thank you. I see it for UNC how my chances would be difficult.

Chance me guys! and thanks for all the existing chances!

WashU’s acceptance rate for RD this year is likely going to tank big time because the amt of ED1 applicants they took remained the same as last year, but there’s still an ED2 cycle left – as mentioned above, WashU loves demonstrated interest because it’s historically been shotgunned ala Case Western (due to a lack of a supplement until this year) and ED is one of the best ways to show it, so they take a lot of applicants from the ED pools.

Last year, the RD acceptance rate was 13%; this year, it’s not impossible that it will drop to below 10% unless the amount of ED2 applicants admitted are small.

You have a good shot at UNC Chapel Hill, Rochester, BU and Emory. Rice and Duke are shots in the dark, possibly WashU as well. Good luck with the process and remember to pick a school where your stats are within the top 15-20% of the entering class – otherwise, you’ll find it harder to beat the curve and get As.

^Rice’s ED acceptance rate dropped about 5% since last year. RD is going to be brutal. Good luck!
