I applied to the following schools:
Rice
Tufts
Emory
Georgetown
UC Berkeley
Northeastern
Boston U
Case Western Reserve
Georgia Tech
Tulane
My intended major is Chemical or Biomedical Engineering. I have been accepted to Georgia Tech, and was deferred from Tulane.
Here is my profile:
Objective:
ACT: 30
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.97
AP: AP Lang and Comp (5), European History (5), Biology (3)
The 3 on Biology was lower than I had expected, but I did well in the class, and I had my Biology teacher write my letter of rec. According to my counselor it was “fantastic.”
Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, AP Physics 1 and Physics C: Mechanics
I have taken 7 Honors courses throughout high school as well
I go to one of the best private schools in the state, where students are not encouraged to take more than 2 AP classes per year.
My essays were strong, and my recommendations were great.
Awards/Achievements: Received the rank of “Degree of Excellence.” in the National Speech and Debate Association, Inducted into the National Honor Society, AP Scholar
Extracurriculars:
Have volunteered at my local children’s hospital since freshman year.
Community Service Committee
International Club
Yearbook–Editor-in-Chief (takes up A LOT of my time).
Speech and Debate
Volleyball Team Manager
Varsity Golf Team
NHS Historian

White Female, Dual-Citizen
GPA is stellar but ACT is slightly on the lower side. That being said, I think you have a good chance at most of your schools. Rice will be a slight reach with that ACT however, but your course rigor and GPA makes up for that. Good Luck!
Rice almost out of reach
Tufts almost out of reach
Emory reach
Georgetown almost out of reach
UC Berkeley out of reach
Northeastern low reach
Boston U match
Case Western Reserve low reach
Tulane low reach
Rice–almost out of reach
Tufts–reach
Emory–high reach
Georgetown–high reach (but if you’re majoring in engineering, why even apply to Georgetown?)
UC Berkeley–out of reach
Northeastern–match
Boston U–match
Case Western Reserve–low reach
Georgia Tech–high reach
Tulane–match
@theaussie I was accepted to Northeastern this year and you know my stats but I know they are very competitive for engineering. I think you will get in.
Terrible assessment of chances. How is it out of reach with an about average ACT score for the school (Georgetown tufts Emory) and basically a perfect GPA?
Rice – reach your scores are out of the middle 50 but you do have good EC’s and GPA.
Tufts – About the same as Rice but a tad easier
Emory – Low reach/high match – YOu have a decent shot with your GPA. I wouldnt be surprised if you got in.
Georgetown – Not completely sure
UC Berkeley – Reach for engineering because its so competitive
Northeastern – Match Youll probably get in
Boston U – low match
Case Western Reserve – don’t know
Georgia Tech – math
Tulane – low match
Best of luck!
Chance back if you have the time? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/discussion/comment/19160432#Comment_19160432
Yea, my apologies. Actually when I was doing research on those schools (in Nov), I had 32 on ACT, and my friends all told me not to apply to Rice and Notre Dame REA (which is my dream school), simply because I had a “below-average-ACT”.
I guess it’s because our situation is sort of similar, which causes me to temporarily became “my friends” when I was chancing you.
Congrats on your admission to GIT!! A lot of my friends with 35 ACTs didn’t get in so you go man!
No worries @tina23. My scores are on the lower side for Rice, so I completely understand where you were coming from. Thanks!! I was so shocked/excited when I found out-- there were so many great candidates. I feel really lucky
@merc81, no, but they offer a program w/ Georgia Tech. I like both Emory and GT, so it made sense to apply to Emory (plus I’d get more financial aid at Emory).
@laphysica, obviously Tulane is not a low match, as the candidate unfortunately did not get accepted. Her credentials are excellent, though, and I do think she will get into a few of the schools on her list. It all depends on what they happen to need for this year’s class. See this article for a very good explanation of the thinking that goes into this process from the point of view of the admissions office.
