thinking of interning at an engineering company this summer (will this significantly raise my chances?)

Want to be an electrical engineer

If I focus on writing really good essays and have a good interview are my chances high of getting in?

As a Junior I always got mail from the Rice admissions office, I don't know if this is a good sign or useless info.

I do live in Houston so i heard that they accept fewer people from Houston to get a more diverse student body

Is there anything that needs improving? I feel weak in my Extra Curriculars

I am doing early decision, hopefully it will raise my chances

What do you think?

Additional Details
Since I am taking alot of AP classes my senior year (BC, Physics, Lit, Econ and Gov) I am taking two periods of work release (which means I take my classes then go home about 2 hrs early every day) would this significantly hurt my chances?

I know this is alot of info

Thanks!

You’re a junior, right? If so, yes, an internship would be beneficial both to you and to your application (assuming you’re doing something meaningful, not trivial workplace tasks).

Two periods of work release seems a bit steep. If you are actually working, the two work releases is fine. If you are not working, you really shouldn’t take two, especially if your ECs are light. Are Econ and Gov a full year each? At most schools, they’re one semester courses, so they’re not considered too rigorous. I’d consider picking up a cheesy AP like Psychology, Environmental Science, or Human Geography. Taking two periods of work release isn’t necessarily bad, it’s just not good. One is fine though.

I’d personally say its a low reach. You’re profile is pretty well rounded but the ECs are a little uninteresting. Rice prides itself on unique and quirky students. Your profile says “I’m a good student,” but not really “I’m unique and quirky.” Write good essays! Good luck!
