INTERN: I started a medical internship the summer after junior year to see if medicine was something I'd be interested in pursuing. I've immersed myself in a diet/exercise study under the direction of a professor and I do data analysis, watch neuropsych evals and fMRI scans of participants, and analyze different functions of the brain in relation to given data.

Service:
600+ hours, I volunteer at 2 nursing homes and I am an assistant teacher at a local Chinese school. I also started a grant program with my sister my freshman year--we review applications and give out scholarships to underprivileged students at a HS in China. It's not something I do every weekend, just a project I work on around springtime every year.

ANY ADVICE IS MUCH APPRECIATED!

THANK YOU SO MUCH AND SORRY THIS WAS SO LONG

I think you have a really good shot and being from OOS should help as well.

Why are you re-taking the ACT? There is seriously no need. You look like a solid candidate for Rice.

From the original post:

ACT: 34 (retaking)
SAT: 2190 (retaking)
SAT II: 800 Math, 710 US History, 690 Physics (if Rice had score choice I would not be submitting this, trust me )

Why do you want to submit your SAT plus SAT II along with your ACT? Rice only requires one or the other. The SAT/ACT equivalency charts show that your ACT is slightly stronger (your SAT is about equal to a 33 ACT). From Rice’s website:

All freshman applicants must take either the SAT and two SAT Subject Tests in fields related to their proposed area of study, or the ACT Plus Writing test.

@ScienceGirlMom, I think the answer to your question is twofold-- to be perfectly honest, I’ve never considered not submitting the SAT because I figured (and I may be wrong) that colleges want to see good scores on both tests if I can get them. I’m taking the SAT again for the second time to see if I can improve my writing score (I really messed up the essay :() I have been told time and time again that colleges don’t prefer the SAT over the ACT, but I can’t help but wonder if one single ACT score will be enough??? Shouldn’t I use the SAT to back my other score up?

I’m also a little bit confused with Rice’s score choice policy–don’t they require the scores for any test I’ve ever taken, so wouldn’t I have to submit the SAT anyway?

No, submitting an inferior SAT score along with your ACT will NOT help. And you do not have to submit your SAT, don’t even mark that you took it on the common app.

I agree, only submit your ACT score…don’t waste your time re-taking. You are a strong candidate!

SomethingClever: You didn’t say if your ACT score includes the writing section, but if you have a 34 ACT with a good writing score, you should be in good shape on the standardized test score requirement for Rice.

You have an amazing chance at getting in, everything looks perfect. My grades were WORSE than that and I was accepted, so you’re probably safe. Good luck, and maybe I’ll see you here next fall!

So you all are saying that I shouldn’t submit any of my SAT/SAT II scores, and just send in the ACT with writing??? Will Rice not think it’s weird that I have no subject scores?

You are overthinking it. Just send your ACT with writing. Its highly doubtful that Rice would give bonus points for sending in two tests instead of one.
