note: Part of the reason my GPA is so low is my father passing at the end of my freshman year, which took me a really long time to get over. Do you think colleges will understand that?

Schools I’m applying to: Kean University, Seton Hall University, Rider University, The College Of New Jersey, Drexel University, Temple University, Felician
Top Choices:Rider, Drexel, and The college of new Jersey. I’m applying to Drexel and Rider early action and TCNJ early Decision.
I would really appreciate it if you guys would give me your opinions, thanks so much!

Also I am a first generation student. The highest education by anyone in my family is a high school diploma

First, I’m sorry about your father. Colleges will definitely take that into consideration.

I’m curious why you’re applying to NJ state schools and no NC state schools if that’s where you are from? Given your family income, NC will be much more affordable.

You will definitely get into Kean, no question. TCNJ (college of NJ) is much more competitive and since you’re out of state, likely a reach. It will also be expensive as their max award is $6000. I’m not that familiar with the PA schools, but I think you’d get into all the other NJ schools on our list. Good luck!

@NJWrestlingmom I really appreciate your response. And I’m really glad to hear colleges will consider my father’s passing. The main reason I’m leaving north carolina is because I hate it here. I really feel the need to start somewhere new away from everyone I know (except for a few friends I have in NJ) and I’m willing to shoulder the debt that comes with that choice. Thanks for the luck, I’m sure I’ll need it!

The thing is, you yourself can only take loans up to $5.5k freshman year, $6.5k sophomore, and $7.5k each junior and senior. Anything over that will also be hanging over the head of whoever cosigns for you.

I understand that, but me and my mom have already talked about debt and have agreed that I will make the payments rather than her. I won’t leave it all up to my mom. Of course she’ll help as much as she can. But I’m doing as much as I can to make paying for my education my own responsibility.

You should be in for Drexel but affording it is another story, and idk if they’ll give you enough money
