Took the ACT with no studying whatsoever and got a 28, same with SAT 1800. Taking ACT again next month, expecting 30+ and hopefully Subject tests 700+.

I am extremely passionate about politics, so I would like to study Political Science and minor in International Relations/Business.

So far, in order of preference, my choices are:
1. USC
2. UCLA
3. Vanderbilt
4. Georgetown
5. Columbia
6. NYU
7. Pepperdine
8. UCSB and LMU

...and of course Harvard, Stanford, UPenn, and Princeton would be great :) haha

Do I have a chance at any of these schools? Am I on track? Is there anything specific I can do to set myself apart from other applicants? Any other suggestions?

*And I know it may help that I live in California for the UC's, and I know they say it doesn't matter but for what it's worth I am 1/2 Mexican, 1/4 Armenian, and 1/4 Yogoslavian and will be first-generation college grad.

I’m going to be brutally honest. Your chances for most of those schools are slim with that ACT/SAT score. I would say NYU, Pepperdine, UCSB and LMU are currently matches. If you want a shot at any others, break 2000 on the SAT. And forget about Harvard, Stanford, UPenn, and Princeton, unless you enjoy wasting money on apps.

USC is really my number one choice above all. What do you think is a good minimum ACT score I need to be competitive?

Your class rank, GPA, and EC’s are strong but your ACT/SAT test scores are low for many of the schools on your very ambitious list. At this time, I’d have to say your most realistic chances are at Pepperdine, LMU, and perhaps UCSB. You are very top-heavy on schools at present, imo, if you include them all…

^Agreed. Without seriously raising your ACT/SAT score, every competitive school that you listed will be a high reach.

Also, for UC’s, are subject test scores very important or are they more of just required tests that show sufficient knowledge of a subject?

And, I forgot to say I am in the top 4% thing so I get into a UC automatically, however, not necessarily of my choice. Nevertheless, I was told this will help with admissions at all the UC’s.

ELC (top 4%) will guarantee you a UC, but will not help at others if you don’t have the scores.

If you break 2000 on the SAT you are very likely to get into USC. otherwise, you still have a shot but it’ll be harder.

Word of advice: Drop all of those 20+ hour EC’s u have because they make your EC’s look like a laundry list. Your application is better without those EC’s. How much time do you spend a week on CSF? Honestly, that club is useful. Your EC’s are much better without the stupid little things. USC=in if your act is above 30+ and you write an above average essay. If you get 700+ on your SAT’s, submit those to USC because they’ll help you even though they’re not required. Good Luck :)

sorry i meant CSF is “useless”…

Might look at Holy CROSS very good school near Boston. HC is similar to Georgetown but easier to get into. Holy Cross alumni include 1 US Supreme court justice, 1 US Senator, 3-4 Congressmen, Obama’s chief speech writer. HC is also need blind for financial aid(same as Ivies).

I would have to agree with you that it is not very useful and when I apply, I plan on prioritizing my EC’s so they don’t look like a laundry list like you said. Also, does a 30 roughly correlate to around a 2000 on the SAT?
