I am in the top 5% of my class (38/762)
I have 3.88UW and 4.13W
I have taken 2 APs/2 Dual Enrollment Classes from 9-11th grade
I have taken 5 Honors Classes
SAT: 1270 (650 Math 620 Reading) w/o essay (I visited Smith College and the Dean told me that scores are the last thing they look at and that they don’t really do anything for your application.)
I was the president of Knitting Club in 10th grade. I have been the president of Ethiopian/Eritrean Club for since junior year. I have had a job from the beginning of my 10th grade year. I just recently quit because it took up too much of my time. I am a member of the National English Honor Society and HOSA.
Since Smith’s average SAT is 1410 and they are test optional, I suggest you don’t submit your scores. You’re probably a Target without the scores, a Reach with your scores.
You were right not to take my advice. In the info session I attended, they said don’t submit any SAT scores that start with a 5, otherwise you’re in the ball park. So congrats!
^^
Rw24745 had SAT’s that began with a 6.
Had she not submitted them, I can assure that the AO would have assumed one or more of her scores started with a 5.
Congrats on getting in! If you don’t mind, could you elaborate on your EC’s? Smith is my top choice but I’m worried about my weak EC’s… you didn’t list as many as some people do so I was wondering if there was anything else that you didn’t mention that might have increased your chances? Thank you!!
Unlike most Smithies, I did not have a lot of time to participate in ECs. I mostly worked after school. My advice to you is to just work on your grades, essay, and supplement. Your essay and supplement are so important. Smith really cares about your writing abilities. Also, please establish some sort of relationship with the admission officers and students that go to Smith. The admission officer that represents my state knew me by my name and I made sure she knew how much I loved Smith. Smith really pays attention to your individual interest. Make sure to schedule an interview and visit if you can–they really pay attention to these details. Remember that they’re taking a chance when admitting you, if they don’t feel wanted then they’re less likely to take that chance.
There is this one student that goes to my school that is EXTREMELY involved and did not get into Smith. This student was class vice president since freshman year! But, she did not take challenging courses and that really hurt her in the admissions process.
My best friend also got into Smith . Her ECs, GPAs and SAT/ACT scores are like mine. She spent months writing her essay and has taken 10 APs over her high school career. I am not saying you need to take 10 APs to get into Smith, but she challenged herself and that’s important.
My daughter would also echo the importance of good writing. She believes that her essay and the connection she made with the admissions person during her interview were what got her into Smith. While her gpa, act, and EC’s were strong, she did not have a lot of individual awards or original research or anything like that. Look at Smith’s common data set, if you match, make sure to show interest (interview) and write good essay’s. Good luck!
