Hi, I am a current junior in high school. My dream is Smith, but I know it is a huge reach. Do you think I could possibly get in?
Overall GPA (W): 3.96
Current quarter (W): 4.11
I am only in two AP classes right now, but plan to take a few more next year. I also take classes at two local colleges; one is a private school, and the other is a community college. Freshman year I only took one honors class and received a mix of A’s and B’s. Last year, I took two honors classes and had straight A’s.
My extracurricular activities include: Key Club, president of World Language Club, secretary of my school’s Democrats Club, youth advisor to the district attorney, student rep to the school committee, advisor to the superintendent, and a member of the Debate Club.
So far your profile looks strong. What about the rest of your profile, the less objective part. What do you care about? What will your teachers say about you? How do you approach challenges? (Oh, and any test scores yet? Smith has certainly gotten more competitive in recent years. They will want to see strong interest, and a strong “Why Smith” argument coming through your application. Are you thinking of applying early?
I only have my PSAT score which is 90th percentile, so not that great, but Smith is test optional and say it is the last thing they look at if submitted. I believe my teachers will say great things because I really respect them and work hard. I’m thinking of getting my letter of rec from the advisor for my club because we are really close, and maybe get the other from my professor. I’m not sure how I address problems; I think I work hard to overcome them. Also, yes, I am 100% applying ED.
So far you’re on the right track, especially if you’re applying ED. You need to make sure your curriculum is as strong as you can make it (without tanking your GPA). As a junior you should be taking more honors/AP classes, and definitely make sure fall of your senior year you are.
