Chance me for some business schools/LACS/and Ivys.. will chance back! :)

Hey guys… here goes:

Objective:

ACT - 35
SAT II - Math II: 760, Literature: 760
GPA Unweighted: 3.65
GPA Weighted: 4.4
Senior Year Schedule: AP Lit, AP World, AP Art History, AP Bio, AP Calc AB
AP Scores: US History 5, US Government 5 (our school wouldn’t allow us to take more than 2 junior year)

Subjective:

EC’s: FBLA Chairman, won FBLA regional competition (first place) in computer networking senior year, won an inter-high school competition with FBLA in junior year in stock trading, placed in top 10 in stock trading club every year in high school, won stock trading competition in 10th grade and was named president of my school’s business club, garden club for three years - won a prize for most hours dedicated to school garden,

Community Service: 200+ hours at senior center

Independent Research: conducted a scientific study all by myself (don’t wanna say specifics but made a fairly big discovery in a very controversial area)

Additional: lived in England for a year so got that international well-roundedness lol

NYU Supplement: not that bad

Amherst Supplement: submitted a graded paper… pretty goodish

Williams Supplement: didn’t do it (it was optional)

Dartmouth Supplement: amazing

Brown Supplements: mostly pretty goodish

Columbia Supplements: mostly pretty goodish

Common App Essay: amazing - wrote about how a sick family member and a courageous doctor inspired me to do independent research and make a discovery (see above)

Other:

URM, first gen: nah

Ethnicity: white

I suppose my main pluses are the top scores, international well-roundedness, and independent research which was nice. The EC’s are okayish but could be better obviously. Grades were horrible (all A’s freshman and sophomore but very many B’s junior and senior). I took all honors and AP classes all of the time though, so the weighted GPA comes out to a steady 4.4, but the unweighted GPA is atrocious obviously… :frowning:

Chance me for any one or more of the following plz… thx… if you want me to chance back just say

Brown, Dartmouth, Columbia, Amherst, Williams, NYU Stern, UVA McIntire, Notre Dame Mendoza

Aren’t you the guy who applied to 31 schools? I think your chances have been beaten to death out in that thread about shotgunning (the thread was finally closed).

@intparent‌ Heh, I’m famous around here…

And nah, they really weren’t. Believe it or not that thread didn’t address any specific chances (not for NYU Stern, at least) - it mostly addressed the logistics of applying to 30 schools. I was mostly interested in my chances for NYU Stern and the two LACs here, and I wanted to get some fresh opinions, as most people on that thread gradually became biased towards or against my approach anyways.

You didn’t mention here (unless I missed it above) that you expect your recommendations will be “meh”.

Oh, I forgot to mention recs here. I did clarify in the last thread that I wouldn’t really say they are “meh” - one is certainly good (not amazing, but good), and the other was done by a very lazy teacher, who, from what I can gather, used a generic format. That’s why I said meh originally.

Welcome back, Baloney. As before, the junior grades are a minus, but possibly partly attributable to coming back from England. IMO, the year abroad is a plus. The independent research EC could be a very large plus, if it is as good as you say. All that said, each of these schools is very tough to get into, so chancing is largely anyone’s guess.

When do you expect to start hearing from the 31? I think, before, you already had some acceptances. Any more EA’s to come in, or are all the rest RD’s?

Why thank you for your warm words of welcome, @MidwestDad3‌ (and sorry for the late reply; thought this thread was dead and logged out of my account for a while).

Yes, I did get accepted to a few schools EA, but I’m waiting on all the RD’s. Senior year grades have just come in and they seem to be B’s as well mostly (one A) - obviously bad, don’t really want to discuss it because there’s not much I can do now… do you think that’s the last nail in the coffin for a few of the top places (excluding miracles), or might it still be overlooked to some extent?

Edit: By the way I am trying to get my research supplement published right now in a scientific journal, and I’m sure if that works out it’ll vastly boost my chances even with the B’s, but assuming that doesn’t happen.

Well, there are some outstanding students who get B’s. So don’t beat yourself up about it.

You’ll get into a very good program somewhere–it may not be an Ivy, but it will be a good program. Work diligently there, and then go to an Ivy for an MBA. This will work out for you. Remember, there are some truly outstanding professors at schools that aren’t Ivies. Go to the place among your acceptances that has the best quality of teaching, and you will feel good about being in class every day. Good luck, and I mean that sincerely.

Welcome back Baloney. Your stats put you near the 75th percentile based on NYU’s Common Data Set so I think your odds would be pretty good there. Good luck.

Shotgunner, we are waiting for your results! It’s April 1st, all of your decisions are in. I’m assuming your silence is evidence that your method did not work, but still come and share your results for all 31 schools!

@Baloney1011 I’m curious too! How did it turn out?

Hope you and Goat both achieved what you each were hoping for, and that the silence is because you are both out celebrating! Wherever you end up, make good things happen, okay?

Did you get in?

Great stats and a great chance of getting into Stern imo.

chance me for stern:

Hey there everybody…

Things sorta worked out. I got the “transfer option” at Cornell, so I always have the opportunity to graduate with a Cornell degree (as long as I don’t screw up my grades in wherever I decide to enroll next year). I was waitlisted at a whole bunch of other places. Here they are, in my preference order:

U Chicago
Williams College
NYU Stern
U Mich
Notre Dame
William and Mary
Lehigh
Tulane
Washington and Lee
Colorado School of Mines

So, basically, I guess you could say I was “accepted” to Cornell in the sense that I’m guaranteed to graduate with a Cornell degree as long as I maintain a decent GPA next year at some other institution, and it doesn’t really matter where I go for that year. Right now, I’m really hoping to get into Chicago or Williams off the waitlist. But that’s a separate matter of course.

If I don’t get into Chicago or Williams, this October, I will apply to Oxford/Cambridge/LSE. Since my standardized test scores are top-notch and my interview skills are very good but my high school grades are really bad, I’m an ideal applicant to top English schools, which don’t care about American high school grades, and put nearly all emphasis on scores and interviews.

Anyhow, I’ll still probably be hovering around the Chicago and Williams forums, and in the international section to figure out what to do there. Whether my method worked out or not is for you guys to decide. Does Cornell transfer option count as “acceptance?” Conditionally, I guess. But those are the results, so yeah, make what you will of them!
