I attend a public high school, ranked in the top 50, 100, and 200, depending on where you look.
My GPA in ninth grade was a 4.0. I took biology, world history I, english, french II, geometry honors, studio art, and an anthropology elective. (no other accelerated courses offered to freshmen)
10th grade–3.0 (I’ll explain below)
1st half 11th grade–3.9-4.0
this quarter (3rd)–3.8 so far. I’m taking AP US history, pre-calculus, AP French, honors English, chemistry, health, and a sociology elective. I could have taken precalc honors but chose not to. That was the only further accelerated course I could have taken. I also take chorus independent study
12th grade I will take AP environmental science, AP Euro, Spanish I, AP statistics, economics, and two english electives (creative writing and an elective about gender and sexuality). I plan to take chorus as independent study again
The reason I chose to take 2 english electives rather than actual english is that I had to take at least 2 electives or 1 full year class to satisfy an english credit, and creative writing is my primary interest when it comes to English. I’ve been wanting to take it for all of high school, so I chose to go a different route for English next year. Do you think that could harm my chances of being accepted? It’s not too late to change.
About tenth grade–that year I was an exchange student in France. I lived with a host family and attended a french high school. That’s why my grades are so much lower that year. I am fluent in French. During that year I took: English, English literature, physics, “life and earth” science, math, a science elective, French, French literature, history and geography, and German. I followed the course work of the other students for all classes except French/French literature, when my teacher assigned me smaller individual projects.
My extracurricular activities are:
-wardrobe for school plays (middle and high school plays, will have done 5 by the end of this year, 7 total)
-Mandarin Chinese language classes
-I play the guitar
-as mentioned above, I am part of the school chorus
-this year my school got a mini TV studio and I’ve been helping out with that
-summer after 9th grade I did a workshop making sculptures out of trash and paper mache, based on the work of Pedro Linares with elementary school students at the community center in my town
-this summer I’m going to Europe for a wedding and then I will travel through France and down to Spain with a friend before flying home
-I’m applying for a summer history program but I don’t know if I’m in yet
I live in NY state.
