Chance Me for Syracuse, BU, University Of Maryland, And A Few Others

Hey all, I'm currently a rising senior and am in the middle of the college process. Just wanted to get a firm graps of where I'll stand with the colleges I'll apply to.

Syracuse University, Boston University, University of Maryland ( College Pakr), Fordham, Emerson College, Loyola University Maryland, Temple University, Fairfield University

Acadmics: Overall average about an 86, SAT 1540 ( retaking in June)

Type of school: Jesuit high school that is well respected

Honors/AP courses I will have enrolled in through senior year: English 2 Honors, AP English Language, AP English Literature, Algebra 2 Trig Honors, Biology Honors, German 3 Honors, AP Statistics (let me know if I should add one more AP class next year, which in my case would be AP US Gov)

I plan on being a journalist, and have already begun the process of being a successful one.

I was a Featured Columnist on BleacherReport.com for two years, and had articles featured on cbssports, foxsports, houston chronicle, sfgate.com, and more.

I am now a columnist for National Football Authority, who is partnered with ESPN.com. I also cover the Baltimore Ravens during the season for a blog on NFL.com

Beginning this fall, I will be a play-by-play host for my high school's sports radio network.

Credentials: This past Monday I was a guest on ESPN Radio in Hawaii.

Other co-curricular actitivies I am involved in the most/accomplishments: Baseball coach for two years and volunteer with the youth baseball league, president of german club for 2 years, current member of my school's campus ministry team, lector at church, rotary award winner, member of school newspaper, tutor at higher achievement program at my high school.

I know its a lot of information, but just want to explain how I will look as an applicant.

Thanks for your time!

I really only know about UMd at CP because my dad teaches in the business school there so I can say this much regarding chances there:

 1. You must get your SAT up. Your academics are weak especially your GPA so a high SAT might set that off a little. Also, have you taken subject tests? Do one or two in your strongest area.
 2. Your blogging is quite impressive as are your appearances on national platforms like espn radio. emphasize your passion for that.
 3. Write killer essays about your sports experiences, like I said I found it quite impressive. Adcoms may be intrigued like I am because they want a diverse campus in all senses of the word “diverse”.

Best of luck

Thanks for the advice man… I’m envisoning the same things you are, and I realize that UMD has high SAT scores and that I’ll need to improve upon that.

Anyone else have any “chances” for me?

bump any help appreciated

You do have a clear penchant for journalism. Raise those SAT scores a fair amount (around 1900s) and you’d have a MUCH better chance at all of those schools.

Oh wow, ya think a 1900 SAT is needed in this case?? For Maryland and Boston I could see, I just didn’t think that would matter for the other schools. Either way, I plan on doing much better on the June SAT. Thanks for the tips!

Anyone else?

I just want to make sure that I am not over my head here and that I have a possibility of getting into these schools based off of my resume.

please help thanks

Thanks gumboya! That is sort of the feeling I have. SU. BU, and UMD arent definites due to my average SAT scores thus far.

Maryland has an amazing journalism school and even though your scores aren’t great you’ve done an incredible amount for a hs student and that might really set you apart. For sats I think a realistic goal would be to aim for a 600 or above in every section which you have plenty of time to do. You’ll probably get into temple and Fairfield and loyola md are pretty safe bets because of your school . Emerson will probably appreciate your ecs and Syracuse focuses more on numbers but you’re still a viable enough applicant. I’d say Fordham and bu are less certain but if you raise your scores to the 600s who knows
If you wanna chance back, http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1154141-what-am-i-good-enough.html</a></p>

Thanks dude… My goal has always been for my co-curriculars to make me stand out as a student… Hopefully my college essay can truly make a difference as well.

I think you are pretty much in everywhere except for SU, BU, and UMD, all of which you really need to improve your SAT score to get in. Your ECs are really cool and that should help you a lot! Thanks for chancing me and good luck!

Thanks man hopefully I can improve these SAT scores as much as possible.

Anyone else have thoughts?

BU and umd definitely need higher sats. Idk about the others but temple is a good in for you except that as a public u it is harder to get in oos (but not by all that much)

Syracuse University: Low reach; get your sat up by about 300 points
Boston University: Same as Syracuse
University of Maryland ( College Park): Low/mid reach especially if your oos strive for a 1900-2000
Fordham: High match
Emerson College: Match you should be fine
Loyola University Maryland: Match
Temple University: Low match/match
Fairfield University: Don’t know much about

If you have any questions on UMD or Syracuse as an applicant this past year I would be more then happy to help you just pm me.

Thanks dude for the advice… Yeah only thing I’m not too positive on is my SAT scores. Normally I would say an 1800-1900 is a definite but kids from my school have gotten into 'Cuse with a “B” average and about a 1600 on their SAT. Depends on the uniqueness of the application…

That’s true since the numbers are just averages alot of people are above and below but it’s always better to be above if you can. Also the better the scores maybe you will get some kind of scholarship which would help with 54,000 dollars a year price tag.
