No Hooks and I'm an asian guy from ca

My only real worry is my lack of consistent ECs. I dont think my essays are gonna be amazing either, sadly. My top choices are BA/MD programs at UCSD and USC. Could you chance me for these as well as all of the UCs, Stanford(im gonna apply here early), and MIT. Also, do I have a good at getting the full tuition scholarship from USC?

I think you equated it the best: “No hooks and I’m an asian guy from ca”. Although your stats are otherwise superb, without succeeding in the aforementioned categories, I don’t think that you will have much of a shot at MIT or Stanfoard. But that shouldn’t discourage you from EAing to both of those schools.

You should be an outstanding candidate for all of the UC schools you listed and USC.

I disagree with billa. You have a 4.0 uw and a 2350 on your SAT I, which are extremely high scores. Your EC’s aren’t too bad either. I think that if you can nail the essays, you will have a competitive shot at those top schools (note: competitive).

^If you’re going to shoot down the OP’s hopes, could you at least spell “Stanford” correctly so that you halfway know what you’re talking about?

If you’ve paid attention to the college admissions process or have otherwise read the applications of students competing for the top schools in the past decade or so, I think you would understand that good scores are not going to be enough to grant admission into the best universities in this country. For Stanfoard, and especially MIT, there are going to be kids with grades just as good as the OPs, except they will also have succeeded with their ECs as well.

It’s almost counterproductive to advise someone to work hard on their essays; what applicant is honestly not hoping that his/her essays are going to be the winning ingredient? Great suggestion there. I don’t think that the OP thought that writing excellent essays could put him over the top.

If shooting down someone’s hopes means is the same thing as providing honest opinions, I don’t think that the OP will really mind. And it’s always people like you that like to blame someone for mispelling a proper noun that they obviously know how to correctly spell. Apologies, if your interpretation of a post is tantamount to there not being an A in Stanfoard.

Thanks for the replies guys. Hopefully my lack of officer positions isn’t a total dealbreaker. And yea, I’m trying my best on my essays, but I’m finding it hard to think of an interesting topic. x_x

I think you’re in at USC, and I like your chances at alot of the UCs. MIT is obviously a reach, but that’s not to say impossible with your grades/scores.

I believe thats actually a B.S/M.D but thats trivial.

Strong stats, strong grades, your ECs are ok, but the the lack of any leadership might hurt you a bid. Also, do you have any other big awards other than 7 on AIME?

I play tennis too, but only recreationally. Is it worth including? Tennis, math club, and volunteering have been pretty much the only constructive things I’ve done recently other than school stuff. Well Ive played guitar for 3 years too. And other than my AIME score and likely national merit finalist status, all i have is some other very minor awards from math competitions, swimming, and speech and debate.

I would say make sure to put down that you play guitar, it shows you’re(partially) not a stereotypical asian who plays piano and tennis(sorry, but it’s true). Anything not strictly intellectual is something you should put down, more or less.

IMO, Honestly I think the lack of consistent EC’s hurts you. And having no Leadership positions also hurts you, as that is very important on the application.
On the bright side, your grades/tests are spectacular. However…every Asian applying to where you are from CA has spectacular grades.

Work on your personal statements and common app essay’s. Focus on being different from the asian next to you.

For Stanford MIT, I’d have to say High reach- Out of reach.
As for UC’s, Berkeley and LA (They place a lot of emphasis on EC’s) Mid Reach
Rest of UC’s match and safeties.
As for UCSD MD, Low match Mid match.
USC I’m not to familiar.

umm whatisthis, i think you are somewhat mistaken. I have always thought the combined md program at ucsd was extremely hard to get into (ie. as hard as stanford/mit). And also, ucla and berkeley arent considered matches for me? Please let me know if I’m wrong though, so i dont get my hopes up for berkeley…

Oh I think I read the wrong post on a different window when replying, and read the wrong gpa, not as a 4.0, and your SAT not as a 2350. My mistake. You definitley have the grades. Your EC’s not so much.

UCLA BERKELEY, low low reach. Not exactly a match, as those two uc’s place great emphasis on the holistic view of the Applicant, much more than others, as well as the essay.

and ohhh combined BA/MD? I missed that part as well. Yes it is extremely competitive, so similar to the Stanford MIT chance vvv.

Stanford MIT, High High reach. If essays show you in a different light.

Please take my advice, as well as some other peoples’ with a grain of salt. But I’m really new to this chancing thing, so forgive me if I make any mistakes!
