I go to a competitive, nationally ranked public high school in CA (top 50 nationwide, top 10 in the state) so my GPA has taken a hit with taking challenging courses.
Demographics: Asian Male
Intended Major: CS/Computer Science Engineering/Econ (not really sure at the moment)
GPA: 3.52 (Took every possible honors course besides Honors English 11; 3 AP classes this year)
SAT: 2220 (taking ACT again this year, hoping for 34+).
APs: Psychology (5); Physics 1, Macro, Micro, Statistics (4)
Getting back my SAT subject scores later this year but I’m pretty sure I got an 800 in Math II and around 730+ for US History
Extracurriculars:
-Debate(3 years)
-DECA(1 years; qualified in the International Level)
-Robotics(2 years)
-Boy Scouts (should get Eagle Scout this year)
Volunteered as a library tech helper and staffed at a local hackathon. I also volunteered at some local political campaigns. I founded and led a Political Science club in my high school.
Currently I’m an intern for a construction company where I do IT(managing and repairing computers/servers) work and I’m an organizing fellow for a Congressional candidate.
Please chance me for UCs, USC, UMich, Georgia Tech, UNC, UIUC, and SJSU.
What other schools can I apply to?
I think your ECs are pretty unique and show dedication and passion for your subject interests! Your schools will like that. Your GPA may be a little low but your challenging classes should make up for it. You have good scores so I would say you are a qualified candidate. I think UIUC is a match as well as most of the UC schools… potentially ones like berkeley being a low reach. I don’t know much about SJSU. UNC is always difficult coming from out of state but I think you have a good shot! Georgia Tech is also probably a match. My only thing is your majors are probably ones of the most competitive at this schools, which could prevent a challenge. Write good essays and have good recs!! You’ll do great. For Econ you might consider Uchicago, and for CS Northwestern is also a great option. This may be low-mid reaches for you but it might be worth it to check them out.
@ThatDeafkid My UC GPA is 3.92
UCR- Safety
UCM- Safety
UCLA - Reach
UCSD low Reach
UCB low Reach
UCSB High match
UCSC Match
Your HS is a lot more rigorous than the average HS but your GPA is hurting. CS is also an extremely tough major along with engineering making admissions competitive. Have excellent essays to stand out. Best of luck.
for top UC’s, don’t apply CS or Engineering and you might have a chance. I had around the same GPA (check my post history) and now attend UCLA.
@seniorco2015 But what if through your EC’s it’s soo painfully obvious that you want to major in Engineering/CS, wouldn’t they understand that you’re just playing tricks?
Admissions may question your emphasis on CS/Engineering EC’s but students do change their minds often about their majors. That said, the advice given above about picking a non-CS/Engineering major could backfire. These programs are impacted at the UC’s and can be extremely difficult to switch into later so what will you do?
You have a good range of schools on your list and if you would be happy attending UCR/UCM/UCSC/UCI or SJSU, then go for it. Which is more important: getting into your preferred major or preferred school? Good luck
UCB, UCLA, UCSD, UMich, GTech, and UIUC are all really competitive for CS, and I don’t think you have a high enough GPA to make it, even though you have pretty interesting ECs and took difficult classes. The other schools definitely seem probable though.
Chance me back?

Look into the cal polys is you’re interested in engineering. SLO is a reach, but it is worth a shot to apply.
@hala.madrid2 gumbymom has good advice regarding this question.
best of luck
For Umich engineering it’s a stretch but for just LSA Econ you should be fine.
