Thank you for your reponses and open to any advice!

Academically I was very similar to you. I had a 3.95 UC GPA weighted, and a 2080 on my SATs. I’m currently going to UCSB, I would say you’re an excellent candidate for the mid tier UCs (Davis, SB, Irvine). As for UCSD, Berkeley and LA… well, I wouldn’t hold your breath. LA and Berkeley are a reach because of the low GPA. You may be asking why UCSD isn’t likely… and here’s the reason.

UCSD is a point based UC, meaning, if you get a certain number of points, you’re in. If not, you don’t. So, for example, last year, the point cutoff was 7738. The way you calculate it as follows:

(GPA x 1000) + (SAT I + SAT II Highest + SAT II 2nd highest)(.8) + (Any extra points from various things).

Common extra points include: ELC (300 points), a-g above requirements (500 points), community service (varies, either 150 or 300, depending on 100 hours or 200 hours), very prestigious awards (150 points), leadership (150 points or 300 points), family hardships (250 points) etc.

There are some more, but either way. I got points for leadership and family hardship, and still did not get in. Had I gotten ELC, I woulda been in. Or had I done community service, I woulda been in. Since I see very little that will net you points, I wouldn’t count on it.

Of course, if you’re very serious about getting into there, I would recommend doing a lot of community service NOW. That’s honestly your best bet. I’m not saying its impossible to get in, but if you wanna really boost your chances, you need to do some community service.

Hope I helped.

I see, thanks for the reponse, didn’t know about the point system thing. Yeah I figured UCB and UCLA were longshots. Hmm, also I plan retake the sat (doing it in nov and maybe dec) so that might make it or break it for the ucsd based on the point system. Anyways thanks again, now I have a better idea on what to expect.

One more thing, what exactly is the above A-G courses?

I believe its like… 40. It isn’t hard, almost everyone gets it. You can go ahead and assume you have it. Shoot for 8000+ if you want to be pretty much guaranteed. Probably the cutoff is around 7800 this year, if I had to guess. PM me if you wanna know more about the point system, I understand it pretty well.
