Hello, I am going to be a senior this year at one of the top public high schools in the US (Grosse Pointe South, Michigan) and would really appreciate it if you guys could help me out with these schools. I am planning on applying to Michigan, Notre Dame (stretch), Virginia (stretch), Wisconsin, and Michigan State as my safety school.

Unweighted cumulative GPA- 3.93
ACT- 30 (28 Math, 28 english, 36 reading, 29 science)
AP's - So far only US and Psych with 4's on both exams (taking bio and gov as a senior)
Honors classes- Earth science, American Lit & Comp, Biology, Chemistry, World History

EC's

3 Years Varsity golf - will most likely be a captain senior year
2 Years of JV hockey (quit in order to focus on golf)
Church Mission trip to Charlotte NC in summer of junior year
operated lawn business for all of high school
Varsity Club

Thanks a lot everyone! any help I can get would be greatly appreciated. If you have any recommendations of other schools I should check out let me know that as well. I am looking for a school strong in social studies as my intended major is psychology and I would prefer either midwest or east coast schools. Thanks again.

Might look at some Patriot League schools-Holy Cross, Lafayette, Bucknell. Holy Cross is a smaller version of Notre Dame and slightly easier to get into. HC has nice campus 1 hour from Boston.

I’ve thought about some of those schools before but after making some visits i’ve decided im more of a large university/State School kind of guy. Thanks though. Anyone willing to chance please do. Even If you only do U of M thats all im really worried about as it will probably be my first choice

Since you are a michigan resident I think you have a good shot at U of M. Your high gpa also will help. You may want to try to take more ap’s your senior year so that they see you’re really challenging yourself. Also if you can get those acts up to a 31 or 32 you would be a strong match.

thanks! I really think with the 30 on the act I should be fine (its above 50th percentile at u of m) and my gpa is probably 75th percentile so being a Michigan resident I feel like I should have no problem. But I would like to hear other opinions. Should I take the ACT one more time? Ive always thought 30 would be perfectly fine with the rest of my resume and id rather not take it again.

Hey is it possible for you to take some SAT II’s? I know you excelled on your AP’s so you could probably do well on those two if you can fit it in your schedule. Most of these schools are state schools who give preference to IS students so to boost your chances you should try and improve your scores just a tad as an OOS student. Good luck! :]

Although you can try Michigan and Michigan State, what are your real academic interests? They aren’t strong and apparent enough to me…

Generic choices would be Wake Forest (high GPA, unweighted, in competitive school) and NC State, though. (You can say oh, how much I loved NC from your visits in your essay)

Alternatively, you can try Georgia (Augusta is not far, yeah) and Villanova (a good Catholic college).

My academic interests are mainly in the social studies, and psychology in particular. I know U of M has one of the strongest psychology programs there is which is another big factor in it currently being my first choice (As well as the fact that I was raised a Wolverine). Thanks everyone for the thoughts, I will definitely look into the SAT II’s. If anyone else has any advice or recommendations I would love to hear them.
