@debatechamp That is not a low gpa! Especially for that course load— You need more EC;s though, get involved in more ECs and im sure you would be a match for everything besides HYP. As for HYP, I would think thats a reach even with a list of really good EC’s- simply because its HYP. Good luck!

You are aiming way too high. Your major, computer science, is one of the most impacted majors. Your GPA is way below average for the schools that you are applying to, and you have a downward trend. Your safeties are your reaches. Your ACT may be 36, but GPA is a lot more important than SAT scores in college admissions.

Ok, I think the above post is a bit of an exaggeration. You are definitely good for your safeties and Rochester, but I think your lack of EC’s could be slightly concerning. Many students are captains of sports teams and other clubs/teams and manage to do other things, so this may stand out to adcoms. Other than that, your stats are great and will not be the reason you are rejected!

I think your junior year UW is a little low, but I think you should be fine for your safety schools. could you tell us a little more about your involvement in debate then? How did you do in nationals?

I’d also agree with one of the other commentators: HYP is a reach for everyone, regardless of ECS/test scores/GPA.

Correction: HYP is a reach for everyone, except if you’re a double legacy, at which point it is significantly less of a reach :P

Debatechamp thinks UCSD is a safety. I have a 2300 SAT score and a 4.29 fully weighted GPA. I was rejected by UCB, UCLA, UCSD, and Cal Poly SLO and waitlisted by UCI for computer science. I was also waitlisted by UCD for civil engineering. Scatterplots on Parchment.com show that my results are normal and not rare at all. I believe my stats are better than debatechamp’s. UCB was the most selective school that I applied to. I did not apply to any of the ivies. I applied mainly to the UCs. After I learned my results, I realized that I aimed too high.

I did not see Vanderbilt or Washington U. on the OP’s list. They are both legendarily fond of high test scores. Your GPA is perfectly respectable. It is certainly adequate for most colleges you’re applying to, but I agree that you could use a few more safeties or reaches. What state do you live in? Most state flagships would be safeties for you. In CA, UCSC, UCSB, or San Jose State might be workable safeties.

@Mangiafuoco That’s crazy! Is computer science really that impacted? I’m definitely not applying for computer science, but my friend is and she’s a female. Will being a female help her or not that much?

@onlythebest13 I think being female helps a lot. In my school the Val. (male) got rejected to CMU for comp. science but the someone ranked in top 5% (female) got into CMU for comp. science. They had about the same extra circulars and the val. had a 2290 SAT while the female had a 2250. And both went ED. The Val. was Asian and the other girl was Caucasian.
