Hello guys, I am an international freshman at a private liberal arts college. Since I am international, my goal was to just get into a US college, so I did not apply to any fancy school. However, on my first semester here, I felt like I could have done better with admissions so I am trying to apply for transfer to an Ivy League/MIT.
Major : Computer Science
GPA for this semester : 4.0
Classes : Calculus I (tested out), Calculus II, Design, Computer Science (Java), Physics (Mechanics)
ECs: A lot of web development, some clubs, some sports (recreational, nothing professional)
SAT : 1910 (did not re-take it, should I?)
TOEFL : 112/120
No SAT II (should I take them?)
EDIT : I have an almost full scholarship in my current college, I am trying to maintain the same financial aid if possible (in case that affects my admission decision)
If you chance me, you’ll do me the biggest favor ever. You’ll basically decide my career !
Thanks in advance!
Your financial aid money does not transfer with you, so you need to consider that if you plan to transfer. Each school’s financial aid is different. As a transfer, you may not receive anything. You had better check that out at the schools you hope to apply to.
Also, trying to transfer to an Ivy is tougher than going in as a freshman because you have to hope that someone from an ivy school has dropped out. Generally, you have to have a compelling reason to try to get in. It doesn’t look as though you’ve taken any general education classes.
As long as you have a solid reason for wanting to transfer to an Ivy league/MIT you are going to be in the mix.
However I would retake the SAT if I were you and try to get that to at least 2200+ to be competitive.
General education? As in?
Also, the deadline for SAT is tomorrow so I can either retake the SAT or take 2 subject tests. What do you guys think?
By the way, is it so hard to get financial aid as a transfer? And what would you consider a “compelling reason” ?
If you think you can retake the SAT and score will then take that over 2 subject tests. If not, just take the two subject tests. Just my thoughts.
For the colleges you are thinking many of them are need blind so just check each college out and read their policies. Also a “compelling reason” would be a reason good enough for them to accept you. If the reason you want to go to an Ivy is because of its “prestige” or that you dislike your current instituion those reasons will not get you in. Academic reasons are usually the most compelling reasons.
The general ed credits referred to are the distribution requirements that pretty much all US colleges require to graduate. English, social sciences, arts, etc. You only took STEM classes. All the colleges you want to transfer to require some of those courses for graduation. If your CR/WR scores were the weak part of your freshman application, you have done nothing since to show top colleges that you can succeed in all the types of coursework required.
