My Common App essay was unique, I think, and my supplemental essays were well-written. I visited campus and requested an interview. I guess I’m just feeling really discouraged right now because I was deferred EA from NEU and most of the schools I’m looking at (like Tufts) are harder to get into than NEU
I’m in the same boat. Pretty shocked by being deferred by NE, but they could probably tell that my heart wasn’t in it. On the other hand, I have put my all into Tufts, so I’m hoping things will go better. Thinking I should have gone ED at Tufts and not messed around with other schools. ED has such a better chance of acceptance. Your stats look great, like every other applicant. If you showed how much you love Tufts in your supplements, I heard that helps a lot. Hopefully you will get an interview then you will know you really did all you could (I am still waiting on the interview). Hang in there! It’s out of our hands now…
@apdns19 thanks! Wishing you the best of luck!
@apdns19 @margaret1515 I’m in the same boat as both of you. Also feeling discouraged about my deferral from Northeastern. Also thinking I should have shown more interest, maybe as apdns19 said they could tell that my heart wasn’t in it. But whatever reason they deferred me, it still doesn’t feel good, especially since I was just deferred by Brown. Your stats are great, I have no idea why Northeastern would defer you. Don’t read too much into it. I’ll admit I freaked out so much and I’m still kind of stressing about it because I applied EDII to Tufts and Tufts is more competitive but you have to believe in yourself! College admissions is weird. I saw a lot of people post about feeling discouraged based on their NEU decision, so you aren’t alone. Again, don’t read too much into the deferral.
Just a note, Tufts doesn’t admit an applicant solely because they have “good stats.” Tufts pays a lot of attention to “personality” and demonstrated interest I’ve heard.
@margaret1515 Did you apply ED2? That would be your best bet. If it’s your first choice and you did not apply ED2, check to see if you can switch your application to ED2.
You got deferred from Northeastern because of yield-protection. They want to be reasonably certain that the students they accept will enroll. With your stats they know you will get into more selective colleges. They want to feel the love from you. If Northeastern is your first choice, you should have your guidance counselor call and tell them that if accepted you will definitely enroll – but only if that’s the truth.
I think NEU is deferring all of these people this year because they just added the ED2 option this year. I think they’re hoping that some deferred applicants with high stats switch to ED2 for yield protection (even though EA results just came out, I don’t think it’s too late to switch from RD to ED2 if you were deferred (not saying you should for NEU)).
No worries, I was admitted to Tufts last year with almost the same stats. Your profile looks great, but one thing I see is that your extracurriculares are a bit scattered and it would be much better if they pointed toward a specific area. Also I can’t say you will get in for sure as I have not looked at your essays/recs.
