Hi, I was wondering if I have any shot of getting accepted to Tufts, either early decision or regular decision. I will be a senior this coming fall. I am a white male. I live in New Jersey, and I believe i am within the top ~3% of my class of about 530 students (potentially in the top 10).
GPA:
101.95 (my school doesn't use the 4.0 scale)
SAT:
combined score of 2220 (800 math, 770 writing, 650 reading)
ACT:
took once, 32 composite
SAT II:
800 on math II, 800 on chem, considering taking one of the bio ones
AP:
4 on chem (sadface), and 5 on statistics. will take bio and calc (probably BC) this school year
EC:
*interact club 9-12
*boys tennis 9-12 (jv 9th grade, will be captain this year)
*sportsmanship award and allstar award 11
*USTA team tennis for 3 years
*tennis lessons for over 7 years
*french honors society 10-12
*ESCAPE club (environmental club) 11-12
*english department award 10 (given to the students with the 2 highest averages in honors english)
*second place in chemistry olympiad test in my school (not sure if this means anything)
*volunteering at an assisted living place for the elderly (started recently, going 1-2 times a week for a couple hours at a time)
*summer job working as a cashier at a grocery store (between 10th and 11th grade)
*summer program at northwestern for medicine and leadership for 10 days (the program gave a letter of recommendation, and noted 73 hours of educational events. met with real doctors to experience the field of medicine).

What do you think my chances are? Thanks!

Your stats look pretty good. I wouldn’t use the ACT though. Your SAT is much better. The critical reading section is not the best, but you’re obviously a science guy. 2 subject tests would be enough. I don’t think you need bio. Sounds like you’re going for pre-med. Definately take calc BC. You need to write good essays. Is Tufts your first choice? Are you applying to any Ivies? If it’s your first choice do early decision. I think you have a higher shot, even though there are no numbers to prove that. I just know this year couple of kids that got in ED had much lower stats then RD. But ultimately there is no sure bet. Find a really good back up school that you’ll be happy with and get scholarship. TCNJ has good pre-med and it’s a very good school.

You don’t need to take another subject test. Obviously your stats are fine. Can’t begin to judge your chances - too much depends on essays and recommendations.

Yes, I am interested in going into pre-med. I’m not sure if Tufts is my first choice, but it is definitely in my top 3 (Cornell, Northwestern, and Tufts). I’m also 99% sure that I will take the calc BC test. I believe my high school teaches the AB course, so the rest would be self-study. One of my biggest concerns is my CR SAT score. I’ve already taken it three times, and I think taking it again would look odd. Will this be a problem?

I think if you write some quality essays you stand a good chance for getting in! Good luck!!

Don’t take the SAT again. I think it’s fine to submit both the SAT and ACT (especially if your English subscores on the ACT are good.)
You are probably in that group of applicants that would have a stronger chance ED (where they know you’ll attend if accepted) than RD.

On my ACT I got 35-writing, 35-math, 32-science, and 26-reading…is it worth taking the ACT again or should I not worry about it?

And keep up your grades first semester! The admissions folks will be all happy over an application until they see that the applicant’s grades plummeted senior year.

Sounds like you’re one of those students that doesn’t do great on Critical reading section SAT or ACT. My son is that way too. He got 690 first time on SAT and after some private tutoring he got a 700. His ACT reading section was 32, also lower then his other sections. Don’t know if you’ll raise your score much more no matter how many more times you’ll take the test. Keep in mind, Ivies don’t look at the writing section score. Not sure if Tufts does or not. What I would be concerned about is the low science score on ACT considering you’re going for pre-med. I still say don’t submit the ACT. But that’s just my opinion. Your subject test scores are amazing. So go with the SAT and 2 subject tests. One think I do want to mention, some dates have certain section that are easier. For example when my son took his SAT 2nd time, afterwards everyone mentioned that the Critical reading section was especially hard, so who knows maybe he could of gotten a better score on a different day.

Your candidacy seems to have a good chance! Applying early might give you a slight edge, but you should be competitive in the regular pool too. Good luck!

Check if they superscore the ACT. If they do, DEFINITELY take the ACT again and bring up that reading score!

No guarantees, but then you should be fine.
