Chance Me for Tulane and UNC?

I am a sophomore. I go to a prestigious private school in North Carolina. I do well on standardized test. I took the PSAT and received a 180. I have taken the practice ACT but have not yet received my scores. I currently have a 2.76 unweighted GPA. My strongest asset is my extracurricular activities. I am very involved in several organizations including my church. I also have taught several science camps over the summer with my mother for years. I have started a science book club at my local library which meets once a month and does various hands on activities relating to the theme of the book they read over the past month. I know that my GPA is very low. I have slacked over over the past year and a half or so, but now realized what I need to do.

For UNC:
I have always wanted to go to University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. My father when to graduate school there and taught several classes. Does this help my chances at all?

Do I have a chance at Tulane or UNC? How can I better my chances? Your answers are very appreciated. Are there any other colleges that you can recommend for me? I hope to raise my GPA to at least a 3.0 by the end of this year.

Please pull up that GPA. You need at least a 3.0 for most schools, and Tulane needs a much higher GPA. Sorry.

Thanks! I definitely hope to raise my grades significantly. Though I do not know my exact GPA, this trimester I have yet to get less than a mid-B on any test or project.

Anyone else?

Thoughts anybody?

If you get your grades up and score well on the SAT (2100+) I think UNC would be a high match/low reach. You have a better chance than most because you’re in state, but still your GPA might kill no matter how well you do in the next two years. Maybe for your essay try to tie in the idea that you learned from your mistakes (obviously in an eloquent and not in your face way) because even though an upward trend is good, at a selective college like UNC they could just choose someone exactly like you except they had a good GPA since freshmen year. Good luck!

Both will be a reach with your scores/grades, but the extracurriculars are really good. right killer essays, get great recs, etc. and you have a shot at both.

Thanks for the replies! I have not prepared yet for the SAT at all (except for an elective at my school) but definitely except around, if not over, a 2100. Thank you @rachelshay for the essay ideas!

Hey! If you get your grades up to a 3. something GPA while you still can (might be really hard) Tulane could be a fit for you. Maybe study for the SAT’s a little bit and just work hard. My stats are 3.4 gpa and a 1920 SAT and I was accepted to Tulane EA so you definitely have a chance.

Get your grades as much above a 3 as possible and take ap classes! For tulane… express interest, the optional essay is not optional! Both tulane and unc will want to see at least a 3.5 uw. I was accepted at tulane with a 3.85 and 2120 sat and $25k/yr scholarship.prob won’t be accepted to unc OOS.

Thanks everyone! @Stillty Congratulation on the acceptance!

You can also look into other great colleges because your extracurricular activities draws college’s penchants. University of Florida maybe?

Definitely a thought. University of Florida might be to big for my liking though. I would like a mid sized college.

Get your GPA up! I do have a cousin that got in to UNC Chapel Hill with a 3.2 GPA, but she did have a ridiculous amount of EC’s. Still, get good test scores and raise that GPA
