Planning on majoring in International Relations or Political Science
You have very good credentials and have demonstrated a lot of interest. While your ACT is a little low, your triple legacy, your level of interest, and your GPA can very well overcome it.
When you write your essay, you definitely want to emphasize interest in the interdisciplinary opportunities afforded in the Tulane curriculum. Tulane has become a mecca of interdisciplinary studies and that is very important to the school’s identity at this point. International Relations is interdisciplinary from the get go, so you are in good shape there. I would elaborate on what “International Relations” means to you and how you plan to weave a meaningful major out of it. Emphasize the foreign languages you speak (or at least are on the way to speaking) and significant foreign travel you have undertaken.
Better yet, identify a specific department (doesn’t have to be Poli-Sci or IR) and even a faculty member with whom you would like to conduct some research as an undergraduate and have at least a general idea of what that research might entail. Research opportunities for undergraduates are also an important part of the Tulane experience and something the school strongly encourages.
Another thing you definitely want to emphasize is your commitment to community service, which is also an important part of the Tulane experience and how it aims to distinguish itself from peer institutions. Talk specifically about how you might play a role in helping the very needy communities in greater New Orleans.
With your strong GPA, your legacy and your high level of interest, follow the steps you have a decent shot at getting him. Best of luck to you!
Adding to NJDad68, Tulane wants some assurance you are committed to going there (it’s truly your first choice – ED shows this), and that you will be great fit at Tulane both academically and socially. You have some serious advantages with your campus visit and triple legacy. In your essay, talk about what you liked about the campus beyond what is published on the website. How do you picture yourself there your freshman year? Your legacies probably have shared some experiences and stories that only a Tulane grad will know and appreciate. If your essay comes across as genuine and reflects the real you, you have a good shot.
Also Tulane’s football team is doing really well this year. They almost cracked the top 25 AP poll. Unfortunately, Tulane not being a traditional “football school” the stands are still mostly empty. I’m not on the admissions committee, but you may get some brownie points if you commit to going to the games
