Chance me for Tulane

I am an international from China and after seeing so many briliant students, I don't even know whether it is worth applying to these schools or not..

SAT 2050 CR 650 Math 780 W 680 (Do I need to retake it?)

SAT II to be taken in Oct. Hopefully I will get two 800s in Physics and Math II

AP taken: Microecon PhysicsB Calc AB all 5s
to be taken: stat chemistry Physics C Macroecon

GPA I don't know what I am going to get cuz I am in China, everything is not standardized yet..so.. but I know I ranked probably top 10

I got straight A's in every class I took except Calc AB. I am not coming along with my Math teacher even though every Chinese student is supposed to be great in Math.

IELTS 7.0

ECs Volunteering at Hospital (4 years)

Leader of a research club on local places of interest to be protected (4 years)

Director of serveral plays

Cover designer of school publications

Plays badminton[Does that count?]

Spanish Club (3rd language)

SAT Contest(Regional) 4th [Crazy...]

Best English Debater [Should I put it here or in the ACTIVITIES section?]

Full Scholarship provided by school

My activities are not so strong but believe me, I would have more if only I had the chance. I really want to show this in my essays but I haven't found a good point to start yet. Any advice?

Essays I am working on that. One question. Is it necessary to boast yourself in the essays or just show them who you are since the awards are listed?

Teacher Recs Two fabulous recommendation letters, one from my Econ teacher and on from my physics teacher. I know they love me. I am the only one who participates in physics class so.

I need FA and I know that would hurt my chance.

Tulane is normally need blind, but that may not be true for international students. It is worth checking into that specifically.

Personally, I think your activities are strong. Being a director of a play is essentially a leadership position, and you have a nice mix. Badminton counts if it is something you do often and enjoy a lot. (I actually took a badminton course when I was at Tulane, Phys Ed credit was required then. It is a great sport!)

Your essay should reflect your natural self, something you think is important or want to express. 500 words is not a lot, so do not obsess over it, just let it come out and say what you want. It probably shouldn’t be a restatement of your activities, but it can be about an activity that is meaningful to you and why. With these essays they are looking for good writing skills, economy of thought, and some small insight into you. they cannot get much more out of 500 words.

I think your chances for admission are fairly good, your SAT scores are a bit above average for a Tulane freshman and your class rank is high. Good AP’s with the ones you are taking this year. I have no idea about the money, though. You will have to work with Financial Aid office on that. Here is their page about that if you haven’t seen it already. [International Financial Aid](http://www.tulane.edu/~finaid/idxinternational_application.htm) An e-mail to them about any other questions you have is perfectly fine. That’s what they are there for.

Bump…anyone else?

I would agree with fallenchemist and I will go out on a limb and say your chances are even better than “fairly good”. I can’t imagine why Tulane would not want you and being an international student is well received at Tulane. Your EC’s are very strong. Your grades too.

I have to get a kick out of your statement regarding your own negative assessment on math. Look at this more positive…a 780 in math means you got one wrong on the entire math SAT. That’s great. And you are shooting for an 800 on the SAT II! So what, you did not get an A in one math course.

By the way, adding up your SAT scores looks to me like 2110 not 2050!

I don’t think you need to take the SAT over again (for Tulane). If you have any other schools in mind that are top 20, then maybe.

Look into academic scholarships. I think you will be strongly considered.

Tulane is getting more selective…but I would be very surprised if you did not get in.
