I’m in Berkeley already (well, actually, I’m an incoming freshman), and I say you got a pretty good chance for Berkeley. (I don’t know how schools like your school can give students GPA’s over 5.0)

You certainly have more extracurriculars than I did when I applied.

Hi there! I’m an incoming freshman this fall at Cal I’d say you have a pretty good shot!

GPA wise, I think you’re good. I had a 4.00 UW and was Valedictorian, but my high school was very, very, very small. The fact that you’re near the Top Ten among 300+ people is impressive, and you’re likely to improve your rank Senior year.

Test scores: I never took the ACT.
SAT I: 2090 the first time and 2010 the second time
(v/m/w)
(720/680/690) (didn’t bother to remember the second set of scores)
SAT II:
Spanish: 710
Math 1: 620
Math 2: 700
Bio-E: 690
(something like that; scores really don’t matter that much after everything so you tend to forget them)

It’s good that you’re already taking the Subject Tests. Jus check if Cal has any requirements for them. I remember some of my colleges needed a language one while some had specific requirements depending nintended majors. Most universities react well to a good Math2 score.

Your extracurriculars are good, as well as your volunteer work. Being President of something will show good leadership skills. I’m glad the Spanish Honor Society is there as it shows a little well-roundedness.

All in all, I think you’ve got a fighting chance I wasn’t particularly a special case or anything and I still got in; my school only offered 4 AP classes and I only took 1! Improve where you can with test scores and whatnot and give your essays a lot of thought when you have to write them. Show them a different side of you; don’t focus on petty high school topics like a teacher that you didn’t like or a test that you had to stay up all night studying for. No university is looking for a student who thinks that surviving high school academics is their biggest feat. They’re looking for student with promise who have already expanded their horizons and know that success isn’t simply about getting good grades - it’s about using what you have and using them well, whether it be your knowledge or your compassion for charity.

Good luck once application time rolls around! And don’t slack off like I did, haha :P

Are you applying to the L&S CS major or the College of Engineering EECS major? The latter is more difficult to get into. I think you have a chance, but it would be good to retake both the ACT and SAT to see if you do better in your Senior year. Also, your GPA will not be calculated at above a 5.0 for UCs, and only includes grades 10 and 11. Count classes with Honors or AP in front of them as +1 of what they would normally get for calculating GPA. For example, an non AP class in which you got an A would be counted as a 4.0 for your GPA, an AP class in which you got an A would be counted as a 5.0 for your GPA. B would be a 4.0, C=3.0, etc. Hope that helps!

You’ll probably get in, however there are many others like you. If you want a guaranteed in at Berkeley I would suggest taking the SAT again. However I think you will probably still get in even if you don’t take it again. This is coming from a UC Berkeley class of 2016-er :)

Your SATs are a bit low for what UC Berkeley typically takes in, especially considering the fact that you’re an Asian, but your extracurriculars look great! If you retake your SAT and get maybe 2150 / 2200, I think you have a very good chance of being accepted. Cheers!

I’m in a really similar situation (4.10 Weighted GPA and a 33 ACT composite) and in the 10th percentile of my school. Just by looking through my school’s graph of GPA vs ACT and whether a student got in or not, for me its a real hit or miss… people who are less qualified than me (4.0 and a 32) have gotten in, but my sister who had a 4.24 and 34 didn’t get in 4 years ago… I’m out of state so I’m sure that has something to do with it, but just as a word of advice I wouldn’t guarantee a spot in the school by any means because it is rather difficult to get in
