Chance me for UC/Cal State Campuses

Quick question : I am taking AP Government and Poltiics and have it listed on my application as recieving AP credit for both the fall/spring semester. However, if I can recall, my teacher stated in the class syllabus that the AP GovPol course would only receive a the weighted AP bump for the 1st (Fall) semester, with the 2nd semester of the school year being presumably “unweighted” and instead used to fuffill the Economics requirement. I don’t want to take any chances and risk being admitted at colleges, so will this be an issue in regard to how I reported the class ? Should I contact the campuses I’ve sent out applications to and request they change it ? or Will they correct that too in their GPA Calculations ?

Senior grades are not included in the GPA calculation so it will not have any bearing on your GPA. You are not taking AP Econ for 2nd semester just regular Econ? If you reported AP Government for Fall and Econ for Spring, you are fine as long it matches your transcript.

@Gumbymom AP GovPol will be showing up on both semesters of my transcript. If there were a AP Econ course at my school, I definitely would have taken it. Econ isnt going to show up on my 2nd semester transcript, but we are supposed to spend a heavy amount of time in the class on Economics compared with the regular AP Gov stuff. The thing is then that while AP GovPol shows up on the Transcript for both semesters, (from transcript : Although the AP cirriculum is taught for most of the year, You will only recieve AP credit for the 1st semester. Your second semester grade in the class will be for regular economics.")

So its still AP GovPol, but apparently I will only get the AP Credit for fall, then get credit for reg. econ instead of the weighted AP GovPol grade. On my CSU apps, when asked for AP Credit, I listed it for BOTH Fall/Spring. I just want to be safe rather than sorry, and I remain unsure as to wether I should contact the campuses I sent applications to as soon as possible to request a change.

I’ve sent out apps to : CSUEB, CSUF, CPP, SJSU, SDSU , CSUSM, and Sac State so far

Should I still be worried, or will I be fine ?

So Econ will not show up on my Transcript. Spring Semester will show AP GovPol, but list it under credit for a semester long econ course ( although the AP GovPol cirriculum will still be taught alongside it.)

You should report what will show up on your transcript since once you enroll, the schools will verify your self-reported classes against your transcript. You could just email admissions and let them know how your school reports and teaches these courses. My son’s school did 1 semester AP Government and 1 semester AP Econ, so no issues. I agree that it better safe than sorry. I do not think it should be an issue since the school does send a profile of the course offerings at your HS and how they weight classes.

I’d encourage you to call the admissions office at each of the schools you’ve applied to and be sure your application correctly reflects your intended courses. They are very reachable and will happily validate/edit your application while you are on the phone. What you don’t want is a transcript sent that doesn’t reflect what they are expecting to see.

For UC and CSU purposes, whether the high school considers a course a weighted grade course does not matter.

Go to https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/institution , look up your high school, and look up the courses that you have questions about to find out how UC and CSU view them.

Generally, report your planned senior year courses exactly as they will appear on your final transcript.

Update : My counselor informed AP Gov students that they changed the APGovPol listing AGAIN to where we take one semester of AP Government, and then one semester of reg. Economics to fufill its requirement. In regard to trying to get my reported classes on the CSU app updated, I must be honest here in saying that It has been pretty frustrating, as only SDSU,CSUEB, and Sac State have noted my requests for changes with ease. However, SJSU refused to do so, telling me “I cannot make anymore changes” and that I should just appeal if I get “rescinded” there. CSUFs email simply told me not to worry about it. I emailed CPP, and after no response called their admissions office who told me to resend the email. CSUSM has simply not responded to any email inquiry I’ve sent in the past two weeks. I may seem rather apprehensive, but I just want to make sure that everything is correctly as it should be listed, and that any mistakes should be corrected as soon as possible. Should I wait a bit more for a response, or should I call the schools I have applied to as soon as possible ?

The schools I have already applied to and reached out to correct application errors are : SDSU/SJSU/CPP/CSUEB/CSUS/CSUSM

Thanks in advance.

@Gumbymom @NCalRent

Greetings, It has been a long ride, but my first few Acceptances have begun to roll in.

Accepted : CSUEB(Match/Safety)/CSUSM(Safety)

Im expecting a decision from CSU Fullerton very soon

TBD : SDSU/SJSU/CSUS/CPP/UCM/UCR/UCSC/UCD/UCSD(UCD and UCSD were my reach schools.)

In regard to CSUEB, it isn’t necessairly my first choice, but I enjoyed the visit to the campus and was impressed by a family member who graduated there for Computer Science. What exactly makes it a value school for CS ? Is it because of its proximity to Sillicon Valley or what ?

proximity to Silicon Valley and lower admission threshold are very big lures to CSUEB. There are tons of tech companies for internships, etc.

@Gumbymom @NCalRent

Hello there and hope everything is well. I had a few questions regarding some of the schools I had applied to.
So far:

Accepted : UCR/UCM/SJSU/Sac State/ CSUSM/ CSUEB - (All for CS except SJSU (Software Eng.) and UCR (Alt. Major - Geology) )
Rejected : SDSU (CS)

Awaiting : UCSD/UCSC/UCD/CPP/CSUF

It looks like the UCR admissions decisions are officially rolling out, and when I was able to finally log in to my portal, A notice appeared which told me that UCR had admitted me to the Alternate major I listed on my application, and stated that spots in CS were limited. However, they also stated that should spots become free, that I could possibly be admitted to the intended CS Major instead. Does anyone know about how this would play out, and is it possible that I may ultimately get into my intended major after all ?

I am also anticipating rejections from UCSD and UCD, unsure about UCSC (CS - indicated as a Low Reach-High Match in a previous thread a few months ago), but feel good about my chances at the last two Cal states.

CSUF requested a 7th semester transcript last month. where I got a 3.83 GPA. Will this affect their admissions decision ?

And lastly, I would like to ask for recommendations about where to consider attending. Location is preferred closer to home, but not an issue at all. I do not care about the setting of the college, be it urban or rural. I have also decided that I will not be majoring in anything else besides CS and related fields.

I apologize for such a long update, but I will be visiting some of these schools I have been accepted at/ may be accepted at, and would like to make up my mind before the end of spring break. I appriciate the feedback in advance and thank you for your help.

This is the first year that I have seen UCR make heavy use of the applicants alternate major which indicates that they do have a record number of applicants. I am a big believer in direct admits for competitive majors such as CS so unless you hear prior to May 1 that you have a spot, I would drop UCR from consideration.

You should have all your decisions hopefully by the end of this month, so I would wait until then to evaluate your choices. As of now, I think SJSU would be at the top followed by CSUEB. If you get into UCSC or one of the other UC’s, then they would be also should be on the top for consideration.

Regarding 7th semester transcripts for CSUF, I think your solid GPA should help your chances and they do have a good reputation for CS. I know 2 Master degree graduates from CSUF and they highly recommend the program. Even if you get into CSUF and CPP, I still think SJSU has them beat for the CS program reputation and location.

Ultimately, it will come down to what “fits” you best: academically/financially and socially.

A happy student= successful student.

UCR criteria for students to change major to CS: http://student.engr.ucr.edu/policies/requirements/majorchange/cs.html

@Gumbymom @ucbalumnus Greetings once again. After doing some soul searching, and assesments of the places I have been accepted, UC Riverside still makes the most sense for me to attend. Its relatively close to home and I generally enjoyed the campus while I was there. It was unfortunate that I was unable to secure a direct admit into CS outright, but it seems to grow on me that attending UCR would be a logical choice for me. Will attempting to switch from Geology to BCOE for CS be impossible ? If not, I would be eager to do so and wonder how soon I can begin the process of trying to change my major upon commiting to the college.

If it does not go well, I would gladly stick with Geology, but I would like to change to CS.

Here is the link to UCR’s change of major policy for CS. You would fall under the 0-45 unit category.

http://student.engr.ucr.edu/policies/requirements/majorchange/cs.html

Also speak with an advisor during Freshman orientation to plan out your classes. Usually students already in the major get priority for the CS classes.

@Gumbymom I recieved my admissions Decision back from UCSC early. I got waitlisted. Do you know anything about the waitlist statistics there ? Is the percentage pretty low for students to be taken off the waitlist ? I am most likely just going to go with UCR and try and switch majors, but should I decide to Opt-in to the waitlist, what can I expect these next few months?

Final count

Accepted : UCR/UCM/SJSU/CPP/CSUF/CSUS/CSUEB/CSUSM/
Waitlisted : UCSC
Denied : UCSD/UCD/SDSU

@Gumbymom Extension of previous question : Should I SIR at UCR, and then opt-in to the UCSC waitlist ? The portal says I should hear back no later than June. So in the situation I was admitted off of the waitlist, would I lose my deposit to UCR ?

thanks in advance.

EDIT : Just accepted place in the UCSC waitlist now.

Waitlist stats for UCSC was in 2014 and 2015, no students were accepted off the waitlist. Last year, UCSC accepted 4096 off the waitlist. This was due to being under enrolled the year before, plus budget issues so the waitlisted approximately 9000 applicants. This year that reduced the number of admitted students by 400 even with a huge increase in applications. There is no way to predict how many accepted applicants will enroll by May 1 so I would SIR to UCR and place yourself on the waitlist for UCSC.

If you are accepted off the waitlist, you can then decline UCR’s offer minus enrollment fee and accept UCSC’s offer or stay with UCR.
