First generation college student
I’m also applying to ucb Econ, ucsc, ucsb Econ, ucla comm studies, and USC Marshall. Thanks!
Looks pretty damn strong to me apart from missing Calc1/2, why will you miss those?
So you are a transfer student? Are you also international?
@napapapa I started cc with my major as comm studies so I didn’t think I’d need calc. And id thought I’d at least be done with calc by spring but my cc changed the math requirements on me and they said I’d have to start from trig. So I think I might have to take take trig in spring or re test for the placement.
@“aunt bea” No I’m from California and yes I’m a transfer student from community college
So, is the stats class not yet completed - the IGETC requirement - also a major requirement? Your major has a stats class listed. Does this mean you have no math at all when they decide (based only up through fall grades)?
And you don’t have calc? I can’t tell you, but if you have no math at all when applying to Econ, that sounds iffy to me, but how do I know.
Why don’t you just apply to Communications, take calc 1 in summer, and then try to switch to Managerial Econ when you get over there? I see you’re still applying to communications at UCLA, so you obviously don’t hate the major.
Others might feel differently, but to me it seems slightly risky.
@lindyk8 I was going to have my pysch statistics done for the major since I was going to apply to Irvine as well but I dropped bc I’d be taking an extra class for no reason. I was worried about that too, I might have the first class of the life science calc series done I’m spring but that depends on my placement which I’m hoping will work out.
That does seem like a good idea but I’m not sure how easy it is to change majors from different departments, as in Letters and Science to agriculture science.
Managerial Econ is in agriculture?
There’s also the possibility they let you in with a provisional contract with words to the affect that you have to get a B in stats and calc.
If you do apply to ME I would note in the additional comments that you switched majors, which is why you didn’t get calc completed earlier.
Also - you have this option regarding alternate major (from transfer matrix):
“Davis occasionally admits applicants who have listed an alternate, non-selective major and are academically strong junior-level students, but who did not meet the selective major criteria.”
Is Comm selective? Is Man Econ selective?
@lindyk8 yeah it’s in the human sciences division of agricultural science
@lindyk8 do you know if that happens often? I’m not sure what to put on my application for planned classes because I’m not a 100% sure I can place into calc even though I’ve already taken up to precalc in hs. Do you think I could just list trig on my application and then change it if I get into calc?
Yes, you can definitely change it in the January update. You can even update until March.
I added something up there about alternate majors…
Re provisional, I have no idea if they would grant that courtesy or not. I’ve seen those sorts of things, but I’ve also seen people rejected. I was just throwing it out as a possibility.
@lindyk8 neither of them are selective. I think I might apply to straight to managerial Econ and add an explanation in the comment section like you suggested.
Do you know when the colleges actually start looking at applications? bc maybe if I change my math to calc, and I’ll find out in December most likely, that they’ll review my application with calc in my planned classes?
In January is what they call the TAU (transfer academic update) and I would just put the change in there online. They’ll send you a link at the beginning of January. Don’t worry about it not matching the Nov app schedule. They all go by the TAU as regards this current fall and upcoming spring.
The only thing about putting calc in early, then switching it to trig in TAU, that will be a flag to them and they will definitely contact you about it. Maybe better to put trig in the app with the note that you are working on getting into calc. That way if it stays trig they won’t get all weirded out.
They don’t do any serious evaluation until after the TAU.
@lindyk8 Yeah I was planning on writing trig and then switching to calc later. Thank you so much for your help! I feel a little less stressed now that I have that figured out (:
