Yes, my SAT score is out of 2400, but I am going to retake it twice more. 1350 is my first SAT and it was with a minimum level of studying. What if I apply to UCR and/or Pomona as undeclared? Will that increase my chances? I am not of a low income level or a recent immigrant.

If you do not get in to a decent school, then just do what I did as a kid. Go to a CC and then transfer to a 4 year University. I never paid attention to anything in HS and I won’t even bother to give you my HS GPA. I actually left HS after my junior year, worked full time in the evenings, and finished up HS at a local CC. (In 1975, my HS accepted credit from my local CC.) Once at a CC, I finally got interested in school and did OK. I then applied to and got into the University of Arizona. While I was there I eventually got my act together and I even studied and worked abroad for 2 years. Eventually, I ended up at one of the top MBA programs in the country. There is hope for the B- student!! It just takes a little effort to make up for lost time. Now, I am more successful than almost everyone that I went to HS with. I am very grateful for what the CC system offered me – basically gave me a second chance. As a result, I’ve done a lot of work with “at risk” kids in Los Angeles.

1350 is an extremely low SAT score. You would probably need to have the academic capability to score 1750+ with zero studying to have a chance at Cal Poly Pomona. Even with a 2200+, your GPA is very low so the chance for Pomona is low.

Don’t give up. Retake the SAT and try the ACT too. Apply to the colleges that you want and if you do not get in then go to a community college, do well and then transfer to a four year university. It is very simple. Don’t beat yourself up about things that you can not change. Like I said, I did poorly in HS and now I am an executive for a Fortune 100 firm in a position of management and profit and loss responsibility. The community college system worked like a charm for me. It prepared me to go to a four year university and as I said above, I did well enough in college and got the right international business experience afterward to land me a coveted spot at one of the country’s top MBA programs. I started working when I was 13 years old landscaping, working on factory assembly lines, and washing dishes in restaurants. Since I was making money and surrounded by adults that were doing essentially the same job as me, I just figured that that would be my life. I got in a bit of trouble and basically wrote off school as a waste of my time. After a tragic death in my circle of friends at 18, I decided to get a life. I got serious about school and never looked back. My poor performance in HS had little to do with intelligence and everything to do with my attitude, expectations of myself and environment. Once these things changed so did my world.

bobtheboy is giving you a reality check. Going to a community college to catch up on your academics may be the best way to college. When I arrived at the CC, I had never even had an algebra course much less calculus or trig. I clearly remember having to relearn math at my CC. I am now in charge of financial planning for individuals and corporations!!

CSUF might be your best shot but it all depends on what major you are going to apply for. You can still get into a 4 year with those grades but it wont be a UC or the Cal Poly schools. One of my friends got into CSUF with a 2.8ish but had a SAT score of 1500+. Good luck and you should still apply to those schools if you really want them who knows you could get lucky and get in or wait listed.
