I am a high school junior currently, and I am going to start applying to college soon. I really want to go to either MIT or UChicago. These are my top picks for north/northeast schools. I want to major in either physics, physical chemistry, or biochemistry. I am just wondering if my grades/extracurricular activities are up to par for acceptance to these schools. I currently have a 4.0 unweighted GPA, 5.32 out of 6 weighted. I am ranked in the top 2-3 percent of my class. I got a 2220 on my SAT (I'm going to probably retake for a 2300), and 800 on the biology sat subject test, 740 on sat math II, 780 on physics, 770 on world history, and a 760 on chemistry. I am triple blocked in AP sciences this year, and the only AP science I have left to take is Physics C next year. I have had above 95s in every class after Freshman year. I compete in science competitions such as UIL and other academic competitions like Octathalon. I am currently doing an internship at a oncological research lab, and I plan to have some of my research on MGMT methylation of astrocyte carcinoma published. I plan to do another internship at a major biochem lab this summer, and possibly the Stanford research program. I am also going to start I also pursue the photographic arts, my work has been recognized and awarded at high levels, and my portfolio is pretty big, although I have slowed down due to being busy with school. I have a decent amount of volunteer hours at clinics and schools, probably around 80 hours. I also do NHS, and volunteer at a local hospital. I could probably get a strong letter of recommendation from my Chem and Bio teacher due to my academic motivation. I am Asian (Indian specifically), I live in the South, and my parent's combined income is around 500k per year (which is sort of unfortunate in this situation). So these are my statistics, so I am wondering based off of this information if any of you have an idea of whether I stand a chance of being admitted to any of these schools. If not, what should I try and improve on?

I think your profile is very impressive and you are competitive and stand a chance. You’re still up against the best in the world, and they are still reaches for you. There isn’t anything you can improve on or try to make yourself more competitive other than filling out the applications well.

I actually just found out that I have a 3.96 UW GPA since I got one B freshman year. Does this affect my chances?

(Unfortunately), you stand with the rest of us Asians, very impressive record and accomplishments, but since there are just so many of us, it becomes lackluster and dull due to similarities.
I suggest publishing your paper, entering in research competitions, and describing your passion for STEM fields through research, essays, and accomplishments.

As solid advice, don’t really listen to what anyone says about reaches/matches etc. In the end, what really comes through for competitive applicants such as yourself, are strong recommendations, solid college essays, and a great interview!.You definitely stand a chance!

Chance me back?

I’m hoping to find some Native American blood somewhere in my lineage haha!

I think you have a very good chance of getting in. I would be surprised if you didn’t honestly. Those are some very competitive stats, good job!

You should answer mine!

You have great stats and I believe that you should be able to get into one of those through ED. chance me-http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1624266-chance-a-struggling-sophomore.html#latest

Why does early decision make a difference? And when would I apply for ED?

Early decision means that you apply during the fall. Early decision gives you a better chance at getting accepted to the college of your choice. If you were to apply early decision that you would have a better shot at getting to your number 1 choice. However there is a catch, You can only apply to one school through early decision, and if you get accepted than you have to attend the school. You cannot “change your mind”, you have to attend.
chance me please-http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1624266-chance-a-struggling-sophomore.html#latest

Using Stat Fuse I apparently have a 70 percent chance for MIT, 80 percent for CalTech, and a 70 percent chance for UChicago. I’m pretty sure that’s unrealistic.

You can apply to both MIT and Chicago early, as they both do “early action” instead of “early decision.”

So do you think I have a strong chance if I do that?

very strong chance at getting both. MIT on paper says early action doesn’t impact your chances of getting in (took a visit) but it might help you. chance me back. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1626482-chances-for-mit.html#latest

I should also mention that I’m working on entering my raspberry pi based fusion reactor in the intel competition if that helps.

your numbers are fine. tbh I had similar stuff as you but my essays were pretty bad (i only truly liked 2 out of the 5 required essays), which is probably why i got rejected. here are my stats for your reference: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1625284-mit-decisions-come-out-tomorrow.html#latest

ESSAYS ARE REALLY IMPORTANT.

Well hopefully I can pull off an intriguing essay. Writing is my strong suit when I am passionate about it. Your stats are great, and the fact that you got rejected makes me worried. Guess I’ll have to really try on my caltech essays as well, MIT is so hard to get into.
