My goal is to get into UCLA as an Anthropology major =) if not, I'll probably commute to UCI or CSUN =/

My stats
GPA: 3.38
No TAP
Essay: 9/10
Pre-reqs: 3/4 pre-reqs completed (two A's and one B), finishing last pre-req in spring.
Already completed English (A, B) and Math (B+) requirements.

I've worked full time while attending SMC, under represented minority although I don't think this matters anymore, a few more EC's.

I am also an Anthro major and from what I have heard nearly all anthro majors with at least a 3.0 get in to all the UCs. Every counselor thus far has told me not to worry about it because Anthro is so non-impacted.

I am applying with a 3.82, TAP certified,
Pre-reqs will be done in a week with all A’s
IGETC Done. English (A, A) Math (B)

yeah affirmative action in california is illegal, but diversity is not. you could have made a diversity statement on your personal statement. Keep in mind that diversity is very vaguely defined.

@SMCguy I went back as a History major, possibly Poli Sci double, but then I took a Cultural Anthro class and was like “Oh yeah, this is what I was looking for.”

Since then I have taken Physical, Physical Lab, and Archaeology. I love the historical aspect of Physical (Darwin and Scopes Trial ect) but not so much the bones. I do find the genetics and evolutionary bio fascinating, but not a big fan of Math.

I am going to concentrate in Socio-Cultural and Archaeology. I still haven’t decided if I am going to look for work in Arch or stick with Cultural and work with global issues, but no matter what I do I plan on traveling, writing, and teaching as well.

If you are interested in Anthro or Archaeology take a GIS class which is highly used in the field and expected these days. Professor Drake is teaching it at SMC I believe this spring.

Anthro/Arch is nearly a dead field so you will have to specialize as well as adopt a broad understanding if want to succeed. I could have sworn some of you people put me down for possibly choosing it as a major but nonetheless glad you enjoy and wish you’s the best of luck. I may still choose Anthro/Arch because it is the best path to perform museum work and i’m already a certified library, archive, and museum technician.

If you are not going the Ethnographic or Biomedical direction learn as much about natural history and bio and how museums function to be best prepared because that is where many end up working. Learn about federal law, preservation and some cataloging and archival principles along with what accession and acquisition is and research all about the software and XML. There are too many Anthro/Arch PhDs out of work so it is very difficult to get a academic or government job in Anthro these days so just trying to assist by giving you people a heads up.

@BerkeleyOrBusy Cool! I say stick with Cultural. I’ll probably concentrate on Sociocultural and minor in Global Studies or Film. After, I’m planning on doing an EMBA program. I’m older and have work experience in marketing so I’ll probably stay working in the same field. I just really want to do Anthro because I enjoy it so much…and I figured the analytical and ethnography work with societies and cultures is similar to conducting marketing research for a media company.

@kmazza - Thanks for the heads up. I appreciate your input.
