Chance me for UCLA, UCD, UCI, UCSD?

Hey guys, so I'm an Asian (born in China, moved here when I was 5) and I'm in-state.

Since colleges don't look at freshman grades, I'll omit them
*(I'll only mention the harder courses)
Sophomore year: Took
Trig/Precalc : A-/A-
E2H A-/A
Chemistry A/A
WorldH H A/A
PE: A/A
3d Design 1: A/A

Overall gpa: 4.0 uw/w (6 classes)

Junior Year: Took
APChem B+/A
APPhysics A-/A-
E3H A-/A-<--this one was really close to an A
Other classes aren't that hard, art2, 3d design 3, us history

Overall gpa: 3.9857 uw/4.4 w

And next year I'm signed up for
Calc/Stats/English (AP)
and Graphic Design/Art 4

I think i can manage an A in both Stats and English, but probably a B in Calc, so 4.33 gpa weighted first semester
(Although I'm not going to give up on getting an A, going to try my best!)

My sat score (first time) is 2200. My dad says that I should retake again (second time) and shoot for 2300, and that will help boost my chances a lot for UCLA (which I'm not sure where he got his infomation from) but it does seem reasonable that higher score-->better chance of getting into a top college.
CR :720
Math:720
Writing: 760

I took Chinese SAT II so I'm exempt from taking a foreign language, I took Math II but got 740, I have to retake and get above 770 on my second try (since UCLA engineering department kind of requires that a person be good at math). I'm also taking Chemistry SAT II/PHysics SAT II in October since the higher ranked UC's want to use a national standard to compare people that have the same gpa, ecs, etc.

I am rank 9/451 so that's about <2%?

E.c.'s: Well, in school I wasn't super involved, I played badminton for two years and had to stop junior year since I knew I had to maintain my grades(priority). I am going to play senior year too! I was in JV frehman year but moved up to Varsity 2 Singles/Mixed/Doubles and I'm pretty sure I will still be in Varsity senior year (unless our team gets flooded by an onslaugt of pro freshman<--highly unlikely).

I attend church regularly, two days a week, friday nights from 8:00 to 11 and sundays from 9:30 to 12:30. I am also on the worship team at my church, I play the djembe(african drum), normal drum set, and also a vocalist. I have been on the worship team for about three years. I was on the photo/yearbook crew for VBS(vacation bible school) last year.

I have done volunteer service for an old teacher of mine who used to teach 7th grade at Moreland Middle School, I accumalated about 110 hours from helping him over the course of 4 years. I did volunteer service this summer for Northern California Junior Sports Camp (for handicapped kids) and I got about 15 hours.

I have played piano for four years, and gotten to level 10 (certificate of merit).

I take art lessons at Visionary Arts, and I would consider myself to be intermediate-advanced level. I had taken art lessons at various teachers ever since I was 9.

I took Conceptual Physics at DeAnza over the summer sophomore year in preparation for AP Physics, got an A.

I designed 5 t-shirts total for various groups. I designed the freshman class tshirt, sophomore, and junior, and I am pretty sure that I will design the senior year tshirt(given my past history). I also designed the VBS tshirt for both the kids and the counselors last year, and this year the one I made seems like a pretty good candidate.

I'm co-president of Augmented reality Arts Club, a newly started club last year and we got 35 members at first but then it slowly started to die down. I will keep it up and running again next year.

CSF, HFH,Chess Club member.

So what ae my chances? Honest replies only please, thanks! :D
Chance me and I'll chance you back!

Oh, and this is just a side note, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis-ankylosing spondylitis back in 4th grade and I was thinking of using that in my Prompt #2 for UC's, hopefully that will make my application stand out a bit more? (The side effects of using a medicine called Enbrel Etanercept causes great fatigue so I need more rest than the average person)<--couldn't take as many hard classes as my friends.

You’ve got a great chance at UCLA. Just make sure that your essays are really good and you’ll be in a good position to get in. To be honest I don’t think getting your SAT from 2200 to 2300 will make a huge difference.
I think the other schools shouldn’t be too much of a problem getting into.

Thanks! Yeah I was kind of worried since only three people at my high school got into UCLA in the past 10 years.

Just another side note, I’m thinking of majoring in mechanical engineering (I’ve always loved cars and I think finding a career in the design/construction of vehicles would be a dream job)

yup, stats-wise you’re well qualified, just great essays and you’ve got a good shot.

If you could, by any chance?

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1366372-chance-me-stanford-pomona-rice-ucs-others-will-chance-back.html

bump? I’d appreciate if some more people can chance me :D

I agree, your SAT (and your GPA as well) is actually great for UCLA. In your essay prompt, I would focus specifically on how your condition affected your life and what life lesson you can take away from your experience. Try to be brief but meaningful.

Thanks Loncria. Will remember that.

Does anyone think I should retake the Math II Subject Test and go for a higher score? Will it affect my app drastically for schools like UCLA, regarding the mechanical engineering major?

bumpity bump?

bump 10char

bump can anyone chance please?

You should be accepted to all of them. Great GPA and good SAT scores.

Thanks DrGoogle!
Does anyone think UCLA is a high/med/low reach for me?

Bumppppppp

chance please anyone? I’m focused more on UCLA than the others

really? no one?..

dude you don’t need to seek reassurance from other people. with nearly perfect GPA, great test scores, and actually interesting ecs, you’re set for all ucs and more

haha thanks bro. appreciate it!

If I could, considering your SAT’s and GPA are well within UCLA’s 75th percentile, I would designate this school as an easy match. However, UCLA and really most of the UC’s are schools that you cannot be really sure of because they are simply too competitive nowadays. Thus, I would treat UCLA and its peers as reaches, in spite of your excellent academic record, simply because it admits extremely strong students on a regular basis ( plus a few sporadic cases that demonstrate its use of holistic admissions), and will most likely look far beyond factors that you can easily dictate.

Thank you for your reply Nelly. Would my personal statement #2 essay on how i overcame arthritis in 4th grade help bump me up? The medicine that I have to take weekly has side effects such as increased level of fatigue so I need more rest than others. Hpothetically speaking, if my essay really stuns an admission officer, will that get me a bit ahead of the crowd?

In general, when people use hardship in their essay, it is to kind of explain certain failings in scores, may it be gpa or elsewhere. But since i guess I got okay scores, that shows that in the midst of my obstacles I still performed to the best of my ability. Will that count for something?

I’m not trying to get you to say that i have a guaranteed chance, just that I have a better chance than a person that has the same stats as me (in terms of gpa and sat)

I heard that UCLA/UCB look very closely at Personal statements (and of course GPA/SAT as the priority) but given that i have a unusual hardship (and I overcame it) should that matter in my application?

You have a good chance. Don’t sweat Cupertino friend.
