Chance me for UCLA/UCSD??

Hello! I want to go to UCLA or UCSD to possibly major in communication studies/communication. If you guys could give input on my chances I’d really appreciate it!

I’m hispanic, living in Riverside, CA, have 1 sibling but he’s a cs grad.
I’m ranked 6th in a class of about 460
GPA weighted is 4.34, unweighted is 3.92.
(Side note: I’ve gotten A’s in every class except junior year. I took AP Bio it’s extremely difficult to get an A in that class at our school because the teacher makes it practically impossible. So I got a C+ first semester and a B second. But I did pass the AP exam with a 4. Will those grades look bad?)
Passed 2 APS with a 5, 2 with a 4, and 1 with a 3. And I’m taking 4 more this year.
I got a 2050 on my SAT but I didn’t study for it so I’ll be taking it again this week and I plan on taking SAT subject tests for literature, math II, and biology in December.
ACT was 29.

Unfortunately my extracurriculars are rather slim

  • My family is partnered with our local school district. We have an orange grove so we sell them oranges which they provide to elementary school kids. Anyways the past 3 years we’ve been doing it I help in preparing the oranges for bagging so like washing them and then I help bag them. We sell them in large quantities so it takes a lot of time during the week and I’ve also gone to this yearly summer event 3 times where the district promotes healthy eating for kids and we share our oranges. (10-12)
  • I take piano lessons each week-not great. (9-12)
  • I am involved in EAOP which is an academic outreach program established by the University of California (10-12)
  • I’ve babysat my little cousin during the summer for 2 months each summer (summers 9-11)
  • I’m the creator and editor of “Humans of Arlington” in our school newspaper, which is modeled after “Humans of New York” I also write and take pictures (12)
  • I am a youth ambassador for the Mission Inn Hotel in Riverside. So I volunteer with hotel and city events, give tours of the mission inn, help prepare set-up for lectures, etc (12)
  • And this year I’m the historian and treasurer for two different clubs, Red Cross and the other is this new girls empowerment club, respectively (12)
  • I suck at sports so :frowning:

P.S. I think I’d want to go into communication studies my sophomore year if i got into LA but I’m not sure what to enter in as?

Good that you could improve that C in the second semester! I think your GPA is ok for both schools but you need to improve your SAT to 2200+ if you want to have a decent chance for UCLA and perhaps to 2100-2150 for UCSD. You are not far off!
(And make sure you do well in your subject tests, i.e., 720+)

Agree with @uclaparent9: Get your SAT score up into the 2200 range and you will increase your chances.

Good Luck.

If you get your SAT to 2200+, you would be in the top 25% of students admitted to UCLA, and that would certainly increase your chances to the “decent” range.

For reference, the latest (2014) Admitted Student Profile states that the 25/75 percentiles were:

Applicants: 1,640-2,060
Admits: 1,940-2,240
Enrolled: 1,790-2,150

Good luck!

Thank you all so much!
