Interesting things:
I'm Diamond 1 97 LP in League of Legends and I compete and win local tournaments
I'm a really adept essay writer. If you guys want a writing sample, I can happily provide one.
Reason for low GPA: Messed up Freshman year, moved from a different state and skipped a grade, got a 3.3 GPA and got pretty depressed. My 10-12 Weighted GPA is a 4.27 and unweighted is a 3.5
I finished the Kumon Math Program in 7th Grade.
I can move my ears without moving any other parts of my face

Schools I'm interested in: Cal Tech, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, NYU, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Riverside, UCSD, UCSB, UChicago, UMich Ann Arbor, USC, Vanderbilt University.

I'd like to receive a merit based scholarship (pref a full ride) since I don't qualify in need-based and my parents refuse to pay a dime for my education >_> So school suggestions for such a scholarship would be great!

Cheers! ^_^

No offense but with your unweighted GPA is really Harvard, Cal Tech, John Hopkins, Stanford, UChicago, and probably Vanderbilt and will be very difficult to get into regardless of your test scores.

I’m guessing your a California resident. Chances are you will be admitted into at least one UC. I don’t know if you’ll be able to get a full ride.

Thanks @tola2015‌ Will my 10 AP’s by end of 11th grade possibly cushion my craptastic GPA?

AP scores don’t affect the chances of admission. If you got relatively good grades in those difficult classes then it might help because colleges will see that you challenged yourself but I don’t think it will help you get into Harvard and the like. AP scores just help for class placement.

When you submit your applications colleges will only see your grades from 9-11 grades for the most part (unless you’re waiting until after first semester ends to apply). When they ask for the mid year report then they can see your senior level grades and that might help.

UMich OOS: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-michigan-ann-arbor/942775-any-big-oos-univ-of-mich-merit-scholarships.html</a></p>

You said your parents don’t want to pay so you need to find some more matches and safeties and visit the UC websites for their scholarship opportunities.

Hmmm. I’ve gotten nothing lower than a B in any of my classes. I guess for the likes of Harvard and such a B is inadequate. Will my test scores help me get a full ride, or are test scores just not that big of a deal? @tola2015‌

Merit based scholarships are typically based on GPA and test scores. For example if you had a 3.5 UW then you would have qualified for the U of Alabama’s presidential scholarship: “A first-time freshman student who meets the December 15 scholarship priority deadline, has a 32–36 ACT or 1400–1600 SAT score (critical reading and math scores only) and at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA will be selected as a Presidential Scholar and will receive the value of tuition or $99,800 over four years ($24,950 per year).”

Read her threads (read the updated one first) she found full-rides for her kids and their test scores weren’t nearly as high as yours.

Most UCs are very GPA focused and they do not superscore the SAT. I think UCSB and UCR will accept you. Your class rank is impressive, so you may have a small chance at UCD and UCI. My GPA and test scores are higher than yours, but UCD and UCI waitlisted me.

It is unlikely that you will get merit-based scholarships from the UCs because your GPA is too low.

@Mangiafuoco do the schools you just listed offer merit-based scholarship because Idio said his parents are not willing to pay at all.

@Mangiafuoco‌ Thanks man :slight_smile: Someone linked me to this parchment thing and when I punched in my numbers it said I had a 85% at UCI and a 80% at UCD?

Will they also take course difficulty into account?

You need to calculate your UC GPA, see link:<a href=“Cal State Apply | CSU”>Cal State Apply | CSU;
I would not go by Parchment results which have been known to inaccurate. If you UC GPA is 3.9+ along with your SAT/ACT, then I would say you are a Match for UCD/UCSB/UCI. UCR would be a safety and UCSD/UCLA/UCB would be High Match. You will not get a “full ride” from the UC’s only possibly Regents $2500-$10,000 and then loans. For merit scholarships, you need to look at California Privates or OOS.
Cal Tech/Stanford/Harvard: Reach
Chicago/Vanderbilt/NYU/John Hopkins: Low Reach

@idiosyncraticboi yes, my school also utilizes parchment. Also parchment only has about a 70% accuracy depending on the school. When you ask for your predictions it tells you the accuracy level.

@Gumbymom‌ Thanks :^) What could I possibly do to increase my chances at this point? I’m flying to a different state next week to shadow a world-class neurosurgeon. Would that help my effort at all, or is it not worth mentioning?

Shadowing the neurosurgeon is commendable, but since you stated your intended majors are Biophysics/Biochem or Math, the shadowing would be more applicable if you plan to go pre-med. You could get a good letter of recommendation though, but this would only help for privates since UC’s do not accept letters of recommendation. Unless you take a Community College class this summer to boost your GPA prior to applications, the GPA will hurt your chances for that “full ride”. You need to focus on schools where your scores would get you significant FA, see link: <a href=“Competitive Full Tuition / Full Ride Scholarships - Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>Competitive Full Tuition / Full Ride Scholarships - Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums;
Good Luck and keep researching…

@Gumbymom‌ Thanks so much for that super informative comment! I’ve taken all the Math courses available at my Community College (Multivar, DiffEqs, Calc 3) but my counselor said that they wouldn’t be part of my transcript :(

I honestly didn’t care all too much since i’m after knowledge, but would I still be able to mention those classes?

I calculated my UC GPA to be a 3.8. I kinda now wish that I’d taken easier courses to get A’s instead of taking nearly all AP’s and getting half A’s half B’s >_>

bumperino for a chancerino plserino

realistically, you probably won’t get into a lot of the top schools due to your GPA simply because other applicants have the same if not better test scores (which doesn’t matter all too much) and 4.0 GPAs with equal ECs. Like others have said you can get into some of the UCs.

I would like to point out that I was previously wrong about the University of Alabama using the unweighted GPA for scholarship consideration.

“If both are listed on the official high school transcript, the highest one will be reviewed.” ~ <a href=“Frequently Asked Questions – Scholarships | The University of Alabama”>http://scholarships.ua.edu/faq/</a>

http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out-of-state.html</a></p>

Your weighted GPA + test scores qualify you for the Presidential scholarship. If you did decide to go/apply to UA because of its merit scholarships then your parents would only have to pay room, board, etc. because your tuition would be covered. Also, you would graduate with little to no undergraduate debt if you decided to go to graduate school.

I don’t know if you previously said this or not but were you a national merit finalist?
<a href=“National Merit Scholars – Scholarships | The University of Alabama”>http://scholarships.ua.edu/nationalscholars/</a></p>

I got a 228 on PSAT, but my counselor said my GPA is too low to be a finalist. @tola2015‌
@happydolphin‌ Thanks bud :^)
