Chance me for ucs and state schools please!! :)

I got a 33 on the act and I have a uc gpa of 4.01. I plan on majoring in psych. I’m in state and I have several ecs. Do I have any chance for ucsb?

Based on your stats only, your UC GPA is within range and your ACT score is at the 75th percentile. Most likely a 50/50 chance.

GPA and test scores of middle 25%-75% students for 2017:

High School GPA: 3.96 - 4.25
ACT Composite Score: 28 - 33
ACT English Language Arts: 26-31

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19 capped weighted and not major specific:
UCSB: 53.6%

UCSB states they review applications based on 50% academics and 50% EC’s and essays so what are your other qualifications?

What other schools do you plan to apply?

I think that you are a strong applicant academically, but it might come down to your EC’s and essay. If you’re a strong writer with a unique essay, that will help you. I know you say that you have several EC’s but how many is several and what is your commitment level in them? Three low commitment activities would not be super impressive; on the other hand, 3-4 EC’s including a high level of achievement (such as playing a sport at varsity level or receiving an award), leadership, and commitment would be impressive to admissions officers. Good luck!

I plan on also applying to cal poly and sdsu and i got a 35 on act english if that matters

I’ve been on the varsity dance team for three years, california scholarship federation member for three years, participated in the drama department for two years, and been a leader for our school’s orientation program for one year. I also have a job and what I would consider an interesting life story including overcoming challenges and improving (which my grades reflect) so yeah my activities aren’t amazing but hopefully my personal essays will be enough

How many AP classes have you taken relative to how many is offered at your school?

If you’re only going to apply to UCs and CSUs, personally I would load up on APs, as many as possible. Grades for 12th grade do not need to be submitted unless you’ve been accepted.

You also might want to include a reach school like UCLA as well.

SDSU is definitely a Match.
Cal Poly Pomona is a solid Safety.
Cal Poly SLO is a Match-High Match.

Your interesting life story conveyed in the personal insight essays could help your chances at the UC’s especially if you are a strong writer. You have good EC’s with leadership which can also bump up your chances.

Definitely apply to a wide range of schools and make sure you have at least 2 safety schools that you are willing to attend for backup. UC admissions can be very unpredictable so you want to have some choices come Spring.

Best of luck.

I have taken one ap class and two honors courses and I plan to take two aps next year. So far I have taken every advanced class available to me with the exception of apush.

Thank you so much for all of your help but I have one more question. I just received a 5 on the ap biology test. Will this help me?

I doubt that a 5 on an exam will help because AP scores don’t hold much weight during the college admission process. However, getting a 5 is still amazing and will show college admission officers that you’re academically capable, especially under difficult life circumstances.

**Just an update for anyone who is curious (I actually had a 4.05 gpa and I think my essays were really unique and strong). My results!! Accepted: sdsu and csuLB waitlisted: ucsc rejected: cal poly slo, uci, ucd, ucsb, ucsd, ucla, ucb
definitely not the results I was expecting and I wasted a lot of time and money on applications but oh well

@itscassidilla: Congratulations on SDSU. Since you can only attend 1 school, SDSU is a great option to have. Remember your safety school is someone else’s dream school. Take advantage of this opportunity and you will be successful.
