Hello! I am currently a junior (who should be studying for finals right now, lol) with a 3.71 unweighted and a 4.3 weighted gpa. I take IB classes and I get As and Bs in them. I was not terrified of college until now, since I have to start applying soon. I have taken my first SAT in March, and I got a 1350 out of 1600. I am currently being tutored for the SAT and will be taking it again in August. I will also be taking the Math 2 and Biology E/M subject SAT tests. I do not have a ton of extra curriculars, but I have a few that I am dedicated to: Tennis (7 years with 3 awards), Piano (8 years with 3 awards), Volunteering at the hospital (I have become close with some patients and nurses), Spanish Honors Society and Student Society for Stem Cell Research at school. I am at the top 10% of my class. Could someone please chance me for UCB, UCLA, UCD, UCI, UCSD, UCSB, and USC? Thank you so much!!
Also, I have accumulated over 100 hours of Community Service for working at Loaves and Fishes and volunteering at my local hospital since ninth grade. I have gotten some views, but not any replies! I appreciate constructive criticism and if I am missing some key information for someone to chance me, please let me know! I appreciate all types of feedback.
In state or out of state for UCs? You will need to calculate your UC GPA. @Gumbymom is the resident expert for these matters.
Here is the UC GPA calculator: https://rogerhub.com/gpa-calculator-uc/
Post UW UC GPA, Capped Weighted UC GPA and Fully Weighted UC GPA.
Intended major? The major you apply to can make a difference at the UC’s.
You have good EC’s and a solid GPA but the UC GPA is needed for gauging your chances. All the campuses consider the capped weighted (8 semesters of honors points). UCB/UCLA will also consider your fully weighted UC GPA (unlimited honors points for 10-11th grades). If you are in-state CA than you check which HS courses qualify the extra Honors points here:
https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist#/list/search/institution
If you are out of state, then only AP/IB or DE courses will be given the extra honors points. OOS HS designated Honors courses do not count.
You will definitely need to bump up your SAT scores so the tutor should help.
Hamurtle I am in state! And yes, I see Gumbymom’s comments on a lot of other posts, I am very thankful for her
@Gumbymom thank you for taking the time to reply to my post. My capped weighted UC GPA is a 4.0 but I am not sure what my unweighted UC GPA and fully weighted UC GPA are. However, I can provide you with the classes I took and the grades I got in them (I will indicate which of my classes qualify as UC honors courses as well):
10th grade:
Honors Physics: B/B
MYP Spanish 3: A/A
MYP Drama: A/A
Precalculus: B/A
Honors UC History (UC APPROVED HONORS): B/A
MYP English 5: A/A
Summer after 10th grade:
Health: A
11th grade:
IB Spanish 1 (UC APPROVED HONORS): A/A
IB English 1 (UC APPROVED HONORS): A/A
IB Math 2: B/B
IB Biology 1: B/A
IB Economics (UC APPROVED HONORS): B/B
IB Chemistry: B/A
Summer after 11th grade:
American Government (I predict I will get an A, fingers crossed!): A
I am a California resident, and I plan to take the premed route in college, majoring in the Biological Sciences.
Thank you so much for taking a look at my stats! Much appreciated. However, my post also included a “chance me” for USC. Are the chances any different for this college?
@Gumbymom Thank you for taking the time to look at my stats and sharing a helpful website with me.
My capped and weighted UC GPA is 3.92, my unweighted UC GPA is a 3.62, and my fully weighted UC GPA is a 3.92. I will post my courses and grades here and I will signify which of the courses I took were UC approved honors courses. As for your other stats requests, I am a California resident, and I plan to take the premed route, majoring in the Biological Sciences. I expect to raise my SAT score by 150 points.
10th grade:
Honors Physics-B/B
MYP Spanish 3-A/A
MYP Drama-A/A
Precalculus-B/A
Honors US History (UC APPROVED HONORS)-B/A
MYP English 5-A/A
Summer after 10th grade:
Health: A
11th grade:
IB Spanish 1(UC APPROVED HONORS)-A/A
IB English 1(UC APPROVED HONORS)-A/A
IB Math 2-B/B
IB Biology-B/A
IB Economics (UC APPROVED HONORS)-B/B
IB Chemistry-B/A
Summer after 11th grade:
American Government (fingers crossed, I predict an A)
I get a 3.92 capped weighted UC GPA based on 14 A’s and 10 B’s with 8 semesters of honors points without the American Government class which would be AP or Regular? . Also I get your fully weighted UC GPA as 3.92 since you have only 8 semesters of UC approved honors courses so far.
Under a 4.0 UC GPA capped weighted will be a tough admit for the top UC’s such as UCLA/UCB. If you can raise your SAT score another 150 points that will help and if your Am Government is AP then you can add another 2 honor points to your Fully weighted which would give you a 4.00 Fully weighted.
Although the UC’s tend to be GPA focused and USC more test focused, your overall application package will be reviewed so well written essays and interesting EC’s with leadership can also help.
These are 2017 stats for capped weighted UC GPA and not major specific. Biological Sciences is impacted/selective at many of the UC’s, so it will be a tougher admit. Make sure identify at least 2 safety schools that you are willing to attend no matter what. I would suggest CSULB, SDSU, Cal Poly Pomona, CSU Fullerton and UCR/UCM as possible safety schools.
Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.80-4.19:
UCB: 12.6%
UCLA: 11.7%
UCSD: 38.7%
UCSB: 53.6%
UCD: 56.5%
UCI: 52.1%
UCSC: 75.7%
UCR: 90.1%
UCM: 96.1%
What is your UW 9-11th GPA for USC? A target 3.77-4.00 will be needed to be competitive.
@Gumbymom My American Government class will be a regular level class. I plan to apply to SDSU, UCR, and UCM as my safety schools, however, my high school counselor believes I will be able to get into UCD, UCI, and UCSB easily. I am not sure if I agree with her, which is why I came to this forum
My UW 9-11th GPA is a 3.75.
Thanks for the stats.
You are a competitive applicant. Your stats and ECs are decent. Write great essays and you could get accepted to any of these schools
@doorrealthe thank you so much for taking a look!
