UC San Diego: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Given these brief stats, what are my chances at these UCs? Is it likely that I will be rejected from all these schools? And should I think applying with different majors to increase admission chances? Thanks.
is that a weighted or unweighted UC gpa?
@virsha24 Isn’t UC GPA the capped weighted GPA? 3.96 should be my weighted GPA. my flat unweighted is 3.63
alright just making sure. Unfortunately that would make Davis, SB, SD, and Irvine pretty significant reaches. UCSC would be a match. Still, you have above average test scores so anything can be possible with great essays
Significant reaches? Would you say its because of the majors I plan to apply to, or due to my mediocre gpa
mostly GPA but engineering and computer science make it even harder
Santa Cruz is definitely a match for you, if you could expand more on your EC’s and awards, it could give a general idea of how competitive of a candidate you are. But, with your GPA and test scores, UC Irvine, UCSD, and UC Davis are reaches, and UCSB is somewhat in the middle between UCSC and your reaches
Agree with posters above. GPA+major creates major reaches for most of the schools listed. If you had picked a different major, then some of these wouldn’t be as reachy.
Due to your GPA - UCR, UCSC and UCM are your best shots of the UCs. A compelling essay could make the difference at UCD, UCI and UCSB. SD, LA and B are reaches due to SAT, coursework and GPA.
Applying undeclared may help.
You are obviously bright and motivated, to keep your options open, apply to SDSU and CP SLO and a handful of privates. (Santa Clara and USD come to mind)
Good luck
Alright thanks for replies, would going from undeclared to compsci or aerospace engineering be almost impossible for most UC’s
@LomoKuan You can apply undeclared to “boost” chances (unless it’s undeclared engineering) but gather information from others to see how easy getting the major you want in the future is. The UCs are public schools, so you might end up getting a major you don’t want (usually Econ) because all the other majors are full.
You’re best shots here are at UCSC and UCSB. However, know that Physics falls under the College of Letters and Sciences for UCSB. Choosing, for example, Computer Science or Mechanical or Engineering would make it considerably harder to get in as they fall under the College of Engineering.
UC Davis: AeroSpace Engineering - low/reach
UC Irvine: Computer Science - reach
UC Santa Barbara: Physics - low reach / high match
UC Santa Cruz: Computer Science - match
UC San Diego: Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering - reach
Take some practice SATs, understand your mistakes, and boost your score by 100-200 points and you’ll have a very good chance of getting into all of these. Unfortunately, right now your GPA and test scores aren’t good enough for me to say that you have a good shot of getting into all of these. However, you do have lots of hope… the first time I took the SAT I got a 2020 and the second I got a 2130 (2200 super scored). Get those scores up and you’ll be looking a lot better because at this point there is very little you can do about your GPA

@mototriu so its good that I’m choosing physics because the department is less competitive, correct?
@orlandomagic98 Supposing I get a 33 or so on the ACT, would you say my chances for Davis, Sb, and Irvine, would be considered pretty average by then?
Correct. For the rest of the UCs, you can choose a major under the College of Engineering as your first choice and an alternate major in the College of Letters and Sciences. That way, if you don’t get into your first choice major, you still have a chance at getting into the university.
UCSC and UCSB are your main matches. Maybe try retaking your SATs striving for above a 2100?
chance me back!
Yes I would say if you get a 33-34 on the ACT or 2200+ on the SAT you would be considered an average accepted applicant because your test scores would essentially outweigh your GPA. Considering you said your ECs are “good-great”, I would say you would get in at at least one or two of those (with a pretty solid chance of getting into all 3).
By the way, could you chance me back? (Click on the link below):

@mototriu sorry last question. Does the alternate major act as a “second chance” as in: If my application doesn’t qualify for my primary choice, they reevaluate for the alternate major?
