I’m applying to: UCLA (my #1 choice :)), UCSD, UCSB, UC Davis, and UC Irvine and some privates on the east coast (Emory, Vanderbilt)

It would be awesome if you could chance me! I’ll try and chance back as much as I can

P.s. my school is an extremely competitive and large school (my class has like 680 students, and we’re the smallest class!) with a high Asian population density

if you have any suggestions for colleges I should think about applying to, please let me know!

THANKS SO MUCH

Low GPA for UCSD and UCLA.

Your academics, SAT, and EC’s are all good. I think you’ll have a fairly easy time getting into all the UCs except for UCLA, which is one of the few state schools that easier to get into OOS than in state. Luckily, your first-generation college sort of offsets the fact that you’re Asian. To have a significantly better chance of getting in there, you’ll need to do something that stands out on your application (found a club, get your work published, etc.) or retake the SAT/ACT and push your scores up into the 99th percentile (34 for the ACT, 1480 (out of 1600)) for the SAT. That goes for the competitive southeastern schools you have on your list as well. Assuming you applied today with these stats and ECs, I’d give you these chances.

UCLA- low/reach
UCSD- high/match
UCSB- match
UC Davis- low match/safety
UC Irvine- safety
Emory- high match/ low reach
Vanderbilt- low/reach

Your GPA is a little low for SD, LA, and UCB, but your ECs and SAT score are fine.

UCB and UCLA: Low Reach
UCSD-High Match
UCD-Match/High Match
UCSB-Match

everything else is a low match or safety.

UCLA: High Match/Low Reach
UCSD: High Match
UCD/UCI/UCSB: Match

Thank you everyone! Also I did not mean to put “first generation” down, but I am Asian American

Hmm… guessing your from Calfonia? Lol

Think all your universities are matches to low matches except
UCLA Low Reach
Emory Reach
Vandy Reach

I think you will get into a majority of the other ones and atleast one of these three. Your extracurriculars are strong and those could get you over the line where otherwise itd be very close. Another thing, the weather of the Southeast and Southwest are both hot but its a different kind of heat. The Southeast (espescially GA) is very humid. Just mentioning because all your schools are warm weather. Good luck.

UCLA reach/low reach
UCSD low reach
UCSB, UCD, UCI match

You’ll get into one of them for sure, but I’m not sure where. Chance me back (look at updates in page 1 of comments)? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1786351-chances-at-ucb-college-of-chemistry-and-other-ucs-for-a-below-average-student-p1.html

Does that Unweighted GPA include freshman year?

@QuiteAverage90 no it does not

UPDATE: I also am interested in applying to University of Washington, Duke and Johns Hopkins. I know Duke and JHU are probably both very High Reaches but should I still apply? Like, is it worth it or should I just focus on UC’s?

THANKS everyone for your replies. I’m slightly getting more confident  :expressionless:

UCLA: Low Reach
UCSD: High Match
UCSB: Match
UC Irvine: Match
UCD: Match
Univeristy of Washington: Safety
Sorry I dont know much about other schools.

@kakipants If that Unweighted GPA is only 10-11, your UC GPA should be lower because of the 8 semester cap. I think you miscalculated your UC GPA. To calculate it correctly, you basically find your unweighted GPA + 8 points (the 8 semester cap), and you divide by the number of classes from grades 10-11.

Apply to JHU and Duke if you really want to go there.

Be aware that places like UCD had an average GPA of like a 4.2 this past year. .
UCLA:reach
UCSD: low reach
UCD/UCSB: match-high match
UCI: match
Emory: reach
Vanderbilt/Duke/Johns Hopkins: high reach
Good luck!

For UCLA, the GPA is probably just a shade on the lower side but again it is holistic, and your ECs and test scores are very solid. I don’t know much about the UC system, being out of state, but I feel with your stats you have a very solid shot at getting into UCLA/UCSD/etc. Just work on the essays and you’ll be fine!

Also just wanted to point out that those privates you mentioned (Emory, Vanderbilt) are in the South, not on the East Coast  I know for Vandy, they really focus on test scores, so maybe try raising that SAT score to a 2200+ or 2250+ ideally or raising the ACT (good luck on that retake!). UCLA–mid reach, for the privates-- reach/high reach. Good luck!
