Chance me for UC's + others!

I'm currently going through the college application process and would like to get a good idea of where I stand. I also need help choosing which schools to eliminate from my list since it's pretty extensive, and at this rate the total for apps is going to be like $600+.

Schools I'm considering applying to: UCSB, UCD, UCSD, UCR, UCSC, SDSU, Cal Poly SLO, Syracuse, Pepperdine, and either Berkeley, UCLA, NYU, or USC as my reach school (which one would I have a better chance at?)

I pretty much already got admitted to UCR through their Guaranteed Admission Program (GAP) over the summer, so I know that's a safety.

STATS
• GPA (10-12): ~3.7 UW/4.13 W
• UC/CSU GPA: 3.97
• Class rank: 39/447 (top 8%)

• ACT: 29 (32E 27M 30E 25S 9 Essay)
• SAT: 1850 (600CR 580M 670W 8 Essay) - most likely not sending since ACT is higher

• Senior yr course load: AP Stats, AP Environ Science, AP Lit & Comp, AP French, AP Gov & Econ, Psychology, Journalism
• First term grades for senior year are already in transcript:
Psychology - A
AP Stats - A
AP Environ Science - A
Journalism - A
• Other AP's/honors taken from 10th-11th grade: English 10 H, Chem H, AP Euro History, AP Lang & Comp, APUSH, AP Studio Art

EC'S:
• Track and Field; Varsity Track Athletic Award (11th-12th)
• Cross Country (12th)
• Mock Trial; Most Valuable Witness Award (11th-12th)
• National Honor Society (10th-12th)
• South-East Asian-American Club; co-founder & secretary (11th-12th)
• Interact Club & Key Club; community service club, only going to list one since they're similar (11th-12th)
• Editor for school newspaper (12th)
• Sacramento Journalism Network Meetings; regularly attend meetings for young journalists hosted by The Sacramento Bee newspaper, sponsored by the California Scholastic Journalism Initiative (12th)
• Girls on the Run (nonprofit organization); volunteer for various run events/interactive activities for girls aged 8 to 13 (11th-12th)

OTHER
• Planned Major: Economics
• California resident
• Family income: $140k+
• Huge upward trend in GPA
• Planning to have strong essays

Feel free to suggest any other schools I should apply to. I'd really like to apply to a good mix of safeties, matches, and reaches!

bump10char

Lehigh has Business, Journalism. U of Richmond has Business. Occidental is a good LAC near LA. Probably all toward the reach end, but not unrealistic.

I know you’re going with Econ. Just throwing these at you for Reach options.

I’d say you would have out of your reach school, i would try UCLA because they have slightly lower standards than berkeley. Berkeley reaaally emphasizes test scores and GPAs so 1850 and 29 is too low for them. UCSB- match
UCD- low reach
UCSD- low reach/reach
UCR- high match
UCSC- match and im not that familiar with the rest so i don’t want to give you faulty information. Best of luck!

Your situation is quite similar to mine: Chance me back please? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1569270-chance-me-ucs-do-my-ecs-make-up-low-sat.html</a></p>

UCSB: match
UCD: match
UCSD: match/high match
UCR: safety
UCSC: low match
SDSU: safety
Cal Poly SLO: low match
Syracuse: low match
Pepperdine: match
Berkeley: low reach/reach
UCLA: low reach
NYU: high match/low reach
USC: low reach
for your reach school, I recommend UCLA or NYU

UCSB, UCD, and UCSD - low reach
UCSC, SDSU, and SLO - high match
Syracuse and Pepperdine - match
You prob have a better chance at NYU

Mine please?: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1568705-updated-chance-transfer.html</a></p>

Cal Poly College of business average admission stats:

Avg GPA: 3.94
Avg ACT: 29
Avg SAT: 1303 (out of 1600)

Given your stats, it should be a match for Cal Poly.

UCSB, and UCD have similar admission stats to Cal Poly, hence a match.

Using Cal Poly as the pivot point, UCSC, UCR are below SLO in terms of admission requirements. UCSB, UCD are peers. UCSD, UCLA, UCB, and USC are above Cal Poly.

UCSD: reach
UCLA: higher reach than UCSD but lower than Cal
Cal: high reach
USC: reach (50% range ACT: 30-34)
UCSC: Low Match
SDSU: safety
Pepperdine: Match

Don’t go to UCR that whole area is very depressing.

@Dunboyne those all seem like great options, however, they’re all private and although my family can afford it, it’s not ideal. I am making the exception for a few though, so I’ll still look into and consider those!

@scderek4 thanks! I’m considering applying to NYU between the two just because I’m not a fan of LA but love NYC (hence my screenname). However, I hear NYU financial aid is terrible…

@blindmonkey thanks for the stats! I just looked up UCSD’s average ACT of admitted students and it’s 29 though (http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/campuses/san-diego/freshman-profile/index.html</a>). Would that still make it a reach for me?

@sd9754 is it really that bad? I haven’t visited any of the campuses & their surrounding areas except for Berkeley and Davis. I mainly want to apply to UCR because I know it’s a guaranteed safety.

Are you in-state?
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1569420-chance-me-not-another-generic-thread.html</a></p>

Exactly. You have to look at cost for your reach school, especially if you’re picking just one. How much need/merit aid are you going to qualify for at out-of-state privates? You’ve got two great reach schools, in-state public in UCLA and Cal. It might be worth the coinage to apply to both, unless you want to get out of CA.

June-October it can get up to 100 degrees. Its dry and looks like a dessert. Much of the city is low income and kinda dumpy. Definitely not a college town. The only thing good about the location is its close to orange county which people really like.
Chance me
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1569364-chances-east-coast-schools.html</a></p>

@jkdreamers California, so in-state for most colleges I’m applying to

@Dunboyne For the longest time I really wanted to get out of CA for college, but I’ve realized there’s going to be so much more added costs, and staying in-state is more ideal for my parents. Most people at my school don’t even consider applying to these many schools, but I’m very doubtful… If I don’t apply to say, Berkeley, the “what if” will haunt me for the rest of my life haha…

@sd9754 Ah that definitely doesn’t sound appealing. I don’t know what other schools are almost guaranteed safeties I could apply to, though!

How much more $ is it to apply to one more UC?

@Dunboyne $70 per application, and I don’t think I qualify for fee waivers (which can cover the cost for up to 4 UC apps). My parents keep telling me to just give it a shot at all schools I’m interested in, but I don’t think they expect it to be this many schools haha.

Well heck, I was under the impression that it was your parents who were keeping a lid on that application budget. But it’s you!

@Dunboyne Haha yeah I guess you could say so. I just don’t want them paying so much for me to apply to like 10 schools, which is why I’m trying to limit the amount. I just want a good amount of safeties, matches, and reaches! What’s a good, ideal amount?

Other than the reach schools, I think you’re a very strong candidate for all of these. UC Davis may be a high match but I would still feel pretty confident about it. As for the reach schools, I think you have a pretty good shot at UCLA so that’s worth a try IMO.

Would you mind chancing me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1568918-chance-above-average-gpa-below-average-sat-top-ucs.html</a></p>

@FollowTheReaper thanks! Chanced back.

Any more opinions? Considering not applying to UCR anymore because of the area/general atmosphere. Is UCSC a better alternative (as a low match, almost safety)?

You’re around the 85th percentile for UCSC for the SAT/ACT, so it’s a low match on that front. Their acceptance rate is around 60% though, so it may be enough to qualify as a safety.

You’d have to ask other posters whether it’s safe enough based on their experience.
