hoping to have good essays in which I talk about my dad having cancer and touch on how it dropped my grades, and how I became motivated and used this pain to become interested in conducting research, etc. Do you think this is a good idea? Any essay advice would be much appreciated!

UCLA might be a low reach because GPA a little low looking at the freshman profile, but your test scores definitely help as well as your ECS and if you write a strong essay, I can see you getting in. Your essay topic seems somewhat cliché, but I think it will work if you put a lot of uniqueness and creativity into it (make it stand out from others who may have similar stories).

UCD/UCSD solid match, I would be surprised if you didn’t get in

https://hs-articulation.ucop.edu/agcourselist Have you looked at this for your questions concerning your UC GPA?

@humanacidtrip for the essay I plan on using imagery, emotions, etc. Just figured out my UC gpa is a 3.96, not 3.88!

Everything looks on point, except GPA which is a little low
If you are in-state then probably: Match
If you are out-of-state then: low reach (UC’s are significantly more selective for out of staters)
Chance back?

@guy1234 im in state!! is it true that its getting harder for instate because UC’s want money from out of staters?

UCSD/UC-D seem to both be low matches/high reaches. Would be quite surprised if you get rejected with that rock in SAT score.

UCLA seems to be a solid match. Have you not thought about applying to Berkeley?

Chance me?

@RamenUniversity I feel like I would automatically get rejected from berkeley cause my GPA is so low hahaha

bump

Tbh, your stats are strong - far stronger than you think they are. I think USCD/UCD are safeties, UCLA match, Berk low reach (you should def apply berk). Assuming you’re a half decent writer, I wouldn’t be surprised at all if you were accepted to all. Chance back?

Just wondering, AP scores?

I will have to say low reach to high match. More on the low reach side for UCLA and UC Berkeley. The main thing that they always point back to is the GPA. Everything else is stellar so just write a good personal statement.

@greenscreenbean I got a 2 on chem, 3 on euro, 4 on lit. do you think this will hurt admissions chances to UCs and colleges like johns hopkins and cornell? and yeah ill try to make my essays good! Sure, Ill chance back, link me to your thread?

when I saw this year’s UCSD and UCLA acceptance thread I noticed that people with good test scores/ECs and low GPAs were rejected. Based off that, do you think I still have a chance of getting accepted?

UC Berk- Reach (but you still have a chance. Youd be surprised how much they count essays)
UCLA- Same as Berkeley but slightly better chance
UCSD- High Match
UC Davis- Match
UCSB- Match
UC Irvine- Match
Santa Cruz- Low match/ probably safety
Riverside- Safety
Merced- Safety

@MegaMetalHead do you know which of the top UCs uses holistic review the most rather than simply grades and standardized tests?

Yeah all of them are pretty gpa based but ive heard plenty of stories about people with strong personal statements and lower than the average gpa’s who get in. I’ve also heard that San Diego has a system where they assign points based on GPA, SAT, EC’S, and personal statement then accept the highest ones (so write great essays!) Other than that, I’m not too sure. Berkeley engineering is an exception though. They’re so selective that they are just EC/Stat driven.

http://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/counselors/files/comprehensive_review_facts.pdf

The UC’s use a 14 areas of criteria when reviewing applications. UC’s are still GPA/test score focused, but essays, EC’s, unique talents etc… are considered.

@gumbymom does extensive research count as a unique talent? based on my stats what do you think my chances are of the UCs?

Extensive research would not be a unique talent, but shows passion in an EC. Based on your Stats and EC’s:

UCLA/UCB: High Match
UCSD: Match
UCD: Low Match

Make sure you spend time on your essays and make them great. You are a qualified applicant so Good Luck.

BTW: UCSD no longer uses a point system for admissions.
