Chance me for UCs?

Class of 2010 here.

Asian-American Boy.

AGPA
Freshman: 3.60 (2 Honors)
Sophomore: 3.60 (1 Honors, 1AP)
Junior: 4.05 (1 Honors, 2 AP)
Senior: ??? (5 AP)

Test Scores:
SAT: 1840, 1830 retake... (not sent)
ACT: 26, 26 retake...
SAT IIs: Terrible... Physics/Math2/Literature: All in the 590 range

Extracurriculars/Clubs:

Leader of Engineering Club: Created a Solar Powered boat from scratch and got 3rd in a competition against other schools.

Key Club, Octagon Club, Bottles For the Bay

Piano (started this year at school with no musical experience, getting quite fond of it, highest grade in the class! yay?)

Community service hours cleaning up trash around the school, recycling school bottles from trash cans.

My Life: My parents came to the USA from Korea to give their children a better chance. We initially owned a liquor store, but when I was five years old my father passed away. My mother went from different jobs, from food service to bartender, to support my older brother and I. My brother was a brilliant student, winning California essay contests and awards all over, but after my dad died he got into bad habits, drugs, and eventually got expelled and did not graduate, which really brought my mom down. I wasn't a great student at ALL, but after seeing my mom so disappointed I just had to step up to make her proud of something.

I know it seems stupid, but I blame my low freshman/sophomore grades on this... In the course of those two years I moved to three different schools - moved once halfway through freshman year, then again at the middle of sophomore year, then again at the end of sophomore year. If you look at my transcript you'll notice my GPA plummeting from about a 3.9 to a 3.6 both years second semester. Being the new kid is NOT fun! Learning the new classroom rules and procedures is terrible too.

So yeah, I basically wanted to make it into UCLA, until today when I saw my SAT score drop 10 points and my ACT score stay the same....

Now any UC (Besides riverside) would be a godsend. Can you guys chance me at the UCs and any other decent/good college I have a chance at?

bump10char

Of course you’re guaranteed A UC with your stats. your EC"s are good, your GPA is pretty good, SAT’s are fine… but…

for anything UCI/UCD and above, it would be on the safe side to UP both the SAT and SAT II scores. (and i meant UP, not DOWN. :stuck_out_tongue: lol) keep your senior grades strong… you never know when they become an investment to your college acceptance. Perhaps tour some of the UC’s if possible. (just for fun.)

Now, if you’re talking strictly about UC’s, here’s my rough sketch:

UCR-in
UCSC-in
UCSB-in? or match?
UCI-match? slight reach?
UCD-match? slight reach?
UCSD-slight reach
UCLA & UCB-reach.

good luck op9. ;)

LEMON’s thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/726718-curious-chances-least-uc-irvine.html

Your stats may look bad on the website but in reality they should be fine in order to get in at least one of the UCs that you want to go to.

thanks for the comments, anyone else?

even with sat scores like yours, you still have a chance of getting into schools like ucla and ucb because they admit students based upon a holistic approach, esp. if you have bad scores but butt-kicking personal statements. and honestly, i feel that with your life story, you have the potential to report how such events have shaped your ambitions. for other ucs, like merced and riverside, you have a decent shot of getting in. for schools like sd, sb, irvine, and sc, the competition is a bit tougher, but your stats are v. similar to those who have gotten in to such schools. good luck and please chance me as well for ucla :)

heh, i would but i’m terrible at this kind of stuff.

anymore comments?
