Chance me for UCSC!

GPA: 3.31 weighted and capped
ACT score: 29
took 3 APs (1 senior year), my school had restrictions on how many we could take as underclassmen.
extracurriculars:

  • member of community service clubs
  • took extra math and english outside of school (not college courses)

applying as an english major

i know my chances aren’t high but i’d like another opinion. thanks!

Test score within range but UC GPA way below 25th percentile. UCSC would be a Reach

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.00-3.39

UCB/UCLA/UCSD: 1%
UCI/UCSB: 2%
UCD: 4%
UCSC: 18%
UCR: 38%
UCM: 67%

I would say that you need to have really good essays and extracurricular activities to counter the low chances. These colleges don’t decide on your admission with only GPA. Your ACT score is good, as 72% were admitted in 2017 with your score. I would say that you have a good chance if in your application you show promise, and that you’re ready for college. Remember, it’s not all about GPA.

I’d say ur good. My sister got into UCSC a few years ago and she applied for architecture. She had a 3.1 gpa and a 1450/2400 or 2100(I forgot).

About 4 years ago for UCSC, a high ACT/SAT scores might offset the low GPA and the applicant is admitted. I believe UCSC has gotten more difficult to get into and a high GPS is needed. The GPA trend of admitted students for UCSC have gone up over the past few years. Look at it this way. It a ripple effect. Midtier UC’s like UCD, UCI, UCSB have gotten more difficult and turn down many well qualified applicants who would have gotten in 4 years ago. These well qualified applicants who are not getting into these schools are getting into UCSC. It is a “trickle down” effect which starts at the top from UCB/UCLA.
