Chance me for UIUC Math and CS / Stats and CS

I am thinking of either Math and CS or Stats and CS. I think its harder to get into Math CS than Stats CS, but I cannot quantify how much harder. With these stats, how good of a chance with Math CS despite being in the slightly lower area of GPA? I know that with both majors a 35 ACT is good. But how bad or sufficient would a 34 do? Also, only one person got denied of admission of this school from my high school. Everyone else from my hs in the past who applied to UIUC had accepted status.

Also, would UIUC as Math CS be a Match, Reach, or Safety?

Acceptance rates at UIUC are around 60%. So with stats on the high end of LAS, where math is, and a 60% acceptance rate, it would be a lowish match for you. My daughter with a slightly higher GPA and SAT matching an ACT of 35 was accepted and invited to the honors college last year. Math + Statistics is likely the same.

However, if you’re applying to CS or CS+math in the College of Engineering, that would be a reach for you. You are on the lower end of their mid 50% stats, and the acceptance rates for engineering are in the 20%-30% range, and those of CS even lower.

CS + Math is not in the College of Eng. It may or may not be a reach from these stats below: https://myillini.illinois.edu/Programs/MajorDetail/10KV1438BSLA

Admissions are by major, not by college. So just because CS+Math is in LAS, it doesn’t mean that it’ll be as easy to get in as say History (not to trash History majors, they’re great).

My stats when I got in were pretty similar so you should have a decent shot, but then again the CS department has been very overcrowded the last two years due to high yield so it may be closer to a reach.

Math & CS and Stats and CS are in the A&S college but the overall admission rate for A&S is irrelevant… The two majors, as CS +, have low admission rates, more in the 20% range, and only a little better than CS Eng. You can see the middle 50% ranges for all three majors plus math here (GPA’s given are unweighted) https://myillini.illinois.edu/Programs/ComparePrograms, and those indicate that it might be a little easier to get into Stats and CS than math and CS. Your stats are within the typical middle 50% ranges for both stats and CS and math and CS so you have a real chance but no one should assume admission is likely.

I have been Accepted to UIUC as Math & CS. I believe that a strong point of mine was the RADICAL course rigor. Taking 7-8 AP Junior and 7-8 Senior.
