Chance me for UIUC, U Mich, UW Madison, Purdue, and Case Western for Engineering

Race: South Asian Male

UW GPA: 3.5 W GPA: 4.1

My gpa is low but I got straight A’s in 4 AP classes both semesters of my junior year. So there’s an upward trend.

ACT: 34 ( Math 32, Science 34, Reading 36, English 35)

Major: Engineering Physics (College of Engineering)

One strong letter of rec and one good one

Essays are a 7.5/10

I live in Illinois if that counts for anything

EC’s:

National Honors Society: Participated 12th grade. Hours per week and number of weeks to be determined.

NRI Vasavi Association: Participated in 9th and 10th grade. 3 hours per week. 20 weeks per year. Cultural community service oriented organization.

Chess Club: Participated in 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grade. 2 hours per week. 25 weeks per year.

Scholastic Bowl: Participated in 10th and 12th grade. 2 hours per week. 18 weeks per year.

JV Tennis: Participated in 9th grade. 8 hours per week. 15 weeks per year.

Chinmaya Mission Chicago: Participated in 9th grade. 4 hours per week. 12 weeks per year. Religious group.

Silicon Andhra Manabadi: Participated in 9th grade. 3 hours per week. 30 weeks per year. Cultural group.

Honors:

National Merit Commended Scholar

AP Scholar with distinction

AP Human Geo (5), AP Micro Econ (4), AP Macro Econ (4), AP Physics 1 (4), AP English Language and Comp (3), AP US History (3)

Any help help is appreciated. Thank you for your time!

I think your gpa is going to raise some red flags. Be sure to have safety schools

Definitely in at Illinois since you are instate. The rest are marginal.

I am hoping you just forgot to mention AP Calculus BC. Without Calculus BC engineering in any of these schools will be brutal. If you have AP Calculus BC then you have a shot.

Definitely think you have a shot at most, if not all, of these schools. Best of luck!

I don’t believe Purdue West Lafayette has an Engineering Physics major.

Engineering and Physics are in two different Colleges. The Physics department has an Applied Physics major.

Purdue Fort Wayne has an Engineering Physics concentration.

All three have different academic/admissions profiles. If you can provide exactly where you are applying, we can be more helpful.

GPA could be an issue at either West Lafayette college. They are moderate reaches, in lieu of further info. Fort Wayne is probably a solid match, but I’m not overly familiar with their admissions process.

Living in Illinois and having 4 kids that applied to Engineering more or less to those same programs, you definitely want to have a safety, especially this year.

Your GPA is on the low side, especially for Engineering, even at UIUC which is a top program. This year in state applications at public universities are all up and Engineering especially at Illinois is no given. Your Math ACT score is also on the low end especially for engineering and as someone else mentioned you don’t mention any AP Calc either AB or BC which will really hurt you. My daughters who were both accepted to Michigan Engineering had taken math thru MVC. I am sure that was a big plus. Are you taking AP Calc this year perhaps? That should help.

Illinois as you know doesn’t look at letters of rec, they will look only at your activities, grades and test scores basically, so if you haven’t applied yet, make sure your application is super strong. Your activities aren’t really out of the box, although being Commended National Merit may be what gets you in UIUC at worse for Pre-Engineering.

Madison’s Engineering program has also gotten more competitive to get in these days, but they like Michigan have tended towards deferring people and then suddenly accepting a lot of people really late. Case Western is hit or miss. They make it sound easy to get in, but then are not and have a low yield because they solicit so many applications. Purdue same issue, great engineering school, and like UIUC they were successful with Covid so that may increase applications.

Make sure you have some safeties. If OOS applications are way down or as kids start to get into their ED schools especially if you see ones that get in unexpectedly, that may be a sign that your chances are looking good.
