Hello everyone, so recently I have come to discover that UMD is in fact extremely competetive, and I worry I’ll have to take another reality check as far as where I should apply. I’m currently a rising senior at a relatively competetive private catholic school in Baltimore. We send kids to relatively good schools, and we do send kids to UMD on a regular basis.

ECs:
Choir since freshman year, invited to Schola (varsity) choir freshman year, and Luminaire (alumni choir) sophomore year.
Mock Trial since freshman year, lead attorney since junior year.
Have participated in both my school musicals and plays since freshman year, and I have managed to get lead roles. I also participated in a play associated with Baltimore’s Shakespeare Company junior year.
Co-created my school’s creative writing club with my friend junior year, and acted as co-president. We also released a literary magazine open to submission from all students, and I will be the lone editor next year.
Member of NHS, and I could be named its president next year.
I’ve had a few of my stories published in local writing magazines.
I currently hold a parttime job at Wendy’s.
Volunteering:
Consistently volunteered at a nursing home since summer of freshman year, have accumulated about 400 hours doing so.
Volunteered at the Esperanza Center in which I survived as a teaching assisstant/tutor with the intention of teaching English as a second language.
Volunteered at the GLCCB since summer of sophomore year, have accumulated about 200+ hours.
OTHER:
My only hook would be first generation college student, and maybe first generation American (my parents are white Brazilians though, so I don’t know how much the latter would count). I’m also gay, though I’ve heard sexuality isn’t a hook as well. I’m bilingual too (fluent in Portuguese).
Thank you for any responses!!
