My son is at WUSTL and was also accepted to UM (OOS student). WUSTL is generally a reach, and Michigan is getting more competitive as the number of applications have soared over the last few years. My son had a 3.83 UW GPA (IB program) and a 30 ACT (superscored 32- WUSTL superscores the ACT). I don’t think Michigan uses subject test scores for admission, and WUSTL says that they will only use them if they help- your scores may be on the low side.

As far as WUSTL, demonstrated interest seems to be big, whether it involves a campus visit and interview, attending a local info session, or the ultimate- applying ED. I would recommend applying EA to Michigan for the sole reason that you will be notified by mid December- their RD notification seems to be drawn out. WUSTL RD seems to come out the first week of March, at least 2-3 weeks before most other competitor schools.

Make sure that your essays demonstrate why you would want to attend either school- as my son wanted to major in Classics, he was able to find faculty at both schools whose interests were similar to his. He actually met with one of the Professors at WUSTL, who took him on a 1 hour tour when it was Xmas break. I’m sure that this went in my son’s favor.

Best of luck to you- both schools are very special and very different places. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the schools (back in the stone ages, I chose between UIUC and Michigan and decided on UIUC as I was in state).

What is your intended major? Where is your home state?

Answers to these questions would play a critical role in your chance.

From the admission data of 2013, the mid 50 SAT and ACT for UMich do not match well. The SAT admission score went up while the ACT stays at 29-33. This may indicate the difference between in state and oos students as all Michigan students take ACT as part of the MME. Your SAT score is closer to ACT 30. With ACT at 31, you are at the median for admission. Your GPA is slightly below the admission average of 3.85. You can be match, high match, low reach, or even reach for UMich depending on your answers to the questions above.
