UMich-Match
Washu-Match

Chance me back please!

I would say you’re a match for Michigan and either a high match or low reach for Washington. You’ve done a great job and have excellent stats, and I only say that Washington could be a reach because it’s one of those schools that you really can’t predict that well. Good luck, I think you’ll do fine. :)

Chance me here please!: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1548785-do-i-need-more-safety-schools-my-list.html

Hi @rconn1, both are out of state!

WashU: reach - your stats are on the lower end, but if you can write good essays and spin your ECs well, you have a shot.
UMich: high match

Applying early could help, especially for WashU.

Michigan you should be fine, being out of state might hurt a little though.

What is your intended major?

UMI: High match
WUSTL: Reach

My boyfriend got denied from UMich and was 7th in class of a little over 400 students, had a 4.2 GPA (never had a grade below an A), and 32 on the ACT. He was OOS from MO. He went to State for Golf every year, was always on the Varsity team, and was an extraordinary trumpet player - 4th in state sophomore year, 1st in state junior year, and 3rd in state senior year. He also marched in the Rose Bowl Parade in the Bands of America Honor Marching Band. I have no idea what they’re looking for, but good luck!!!

Oh, and he ended up going to The Ohio State University… ;)

Go Bucks!!!

Thank you all so much for the feedback!
And @billcsho, I plan on majoring in biology!

Your scores may be a little low at WUSTL (although they do superscore the ACT), and Michigan is getting more competitive every year due to a flood of applications. Their OOS acceptance rate this past year was about 20%. My son was accepted to both schools last year and chose WUSTL. Here are some recommendations based on his experience:

If possible, apply EA to Michigan for the sole reason that you are notified by mid December (well at least if you are admitted, you know then; if deferred, you have to wait till Spring). Many students who applied RD had to wait forever to get their notification in the Spring.

WUSTL takes demonstrated interest into account. If possible, I would try to visit the campus and interview. The best way to demonstrate interest in by applying ED (think long and hard about this before doing so, as ED is not for everyone).

Neither school requires SAT subject tests.

WUSTL does not have a supplemental essay, so if you are applying to several schools via common app, depending on this year’s essay prompts, you might consider making a separate version of the common app (if they still allow this feature) so that your essay is specific to the school.

If you are looking at these schools, then I agree with your plans to retake the tests.

If you have any specific questions, you can PM me. Good luck.

hi @PsychoDad10, thank you for all of the helpful info. i’ll DEFINITELY be keeping all those points in mind. Do you mind telling me what kind of grades your son has gotten at high school though? Like his GPA,SAT,ACT? Only if you don’t mind haha. I would just like to see what kind of a student he was (he sounds superior from your info) that he was able to get accepted into both WashU and UMich. Congratulations to both you and your son! That’s amazing!

His UW GPA was 3.83, W GPA 4.27 (IB diploma program). Highest composite ACT was 30 (superscored ACT 32- used at WUSTL, UNC, BC, UVA- admitted to the first 3; wait listed at UVA; he also got into University of Michigan, University of Florida, Johns Hopkins, and Emory). He was a strong student, but not the cream of the crop by any means. He wrote very compelling essays regarding a rare health condition that he has and what he did to improve the lives of others with this condition. So while his ACT score was not phenomenal by any means, his passion and LOR really helped him out (one of his letters was from a world renowned Cardiologist at Harvard Medical School).
