Chance Me for Umich?

Indian girl from Illinois
GPA: 3.4 UW (I know it’s bad…)/4.02 W
ACT (superscore): 33 C (36 E/33 M/34 R/28 S) (32 highest single sitting composite)

ECs:

DECA (4 years) - have made it to state level every year, on the executive board for my school for 2 years
Did a fundraising project for DECA last summer where we approached local businesses??
Advisory Council (3 years) - basically advise the principal on school issues…hard to explain
Volunteering (3 years) - local children’s museum/ the library (between 100-150 hours total)
Did a week-long econ. camp at Wash U this past summer

I was looking at Ross Pre-admit (I kinda want to do something with business) but I it’s super competitive and all that :frowning:

I know that OOS admissions for Umich is super competitive, but I may as well try, right?

So, what are my chances? Thank you so much in advance!

@decagirl123 What’s your Michigan recalculated GPA? An A+, A, or A- = 4.0, B+, B, B- = 3.0… Etc. Your GPA is low but your test scores are there.

@guitar321 I thought that Umich didn’t recalculate gpa anymore?

@decagirl123 oh Hahahaha where did u hear that?

@guitar321 aren’t you just asking her for her unweighted gpa?

@guitar321 I was just under the impression that Umich only looks at your unweighted gpa and doesn’t recalculate it.

@gene167e7 no – her unweighted GPA would account for the difference between an A- and an A+. UofM calculates GPA by doing any letter with an A = 4, any letter with a B = 3, and so on.

So if my normal unweighted GPA were a 3.7 by getting straight A-'s in high school, my UofM GPA = 4.0.

@guitar321 The way my school does it is A+, A, A- = 4, B+, B, B- = 3, so I believe that my current UW gpa would be the same as my UM gpa.

@guitar321 strange… My school calculates unweighted the way UM does.

Oh cool @decagirl123 @gene167e7

UMich did cancel GPA recalculation for 1 year but resumed the next year. Nevertheless, they changed the recalculation method slightly. But basically, the just omit the subgrades.
UMich also does not superscore although they may look at section scores individually (e.g. CoE will look for your Math scores from different tests).
Your GPA is low. How is your class rank? If that is due to the tough grading system as your high school, it may be fine. Even with UMich’s recalculation in your advantage, you may only get up to 3.7 at most which is still a bit low and below the 25th percentile. Around 20% of enrolled students had 4.0 GPA in high school (after recalculation) and the average was 3.87 last year.

@billcsho My school doesn’t rank but I’m probably in the top 15% of my class. Would that help me?

@decagirl123 If you are within the top 15% of your class, then your school’s grading is pretty tough. That may help you slightly. Although UMich does not use class rank as a factor in admission, but your school profile will explain partly your subpar GPA.

Look at Naviance. Michigan admitted nearly 100% of kids from my son’s in-state school applying EA with a GPA > 3.3 and ACT >28 . Certain schools are known for rigor and are given a large bump by admissions.

^ Although Naviance is a good reference, do not count on it too much for UMich. The data there is based on past history while the admission stat at UMich has changed a lot within the last few years.
@TooOld4School Do you count admitted students after deferral? My Ds go/went to the top feeder school for UMich and yet UMich does not accept more than 75% of the students applied EA there.

@billcsho , yes, I am including deferred and then admitted students. The GC’s at his school had many group sessions about the Michigan admission process and emphasized EA. RD students were admitted at a much lower rate.
