Chance Me For UNC-Chapel Hill!

I am currently a high school sophomore and this may be too early to talk about college chances but you know, it's never too late! UNC-Chapel Hill is my dream school! Also, I want to know what I should improve in so that I can get into UNC. So here it goes!

I an Asian Indian in-state
GPA: not sure but had straight A's freshmen year and took all honors classes available
SAT: planning to take it in January this year
Class Rank: Top 10% of class, I think I'm tied for 6 out of 435
AP's: AP World History next semester
EC's:
Key Club (9,10)
Beta Club (10)
HOSA (10)
Red Cross Club (10)
Tennis but I am not in the top 6 so I don't play(10)
I was also in my local temple's youth group (8,9,10)

I am planning to join all these clubs plus more in junior/senior year. I am also a very good artist. But I don't know how to take that skill further to impress colleges because I can't play an instrument and am also not very good at the one sport I play, tennis, but I do hope to improve. I also danced every fall for 9 years for a cultural holiday Hindus observe called Diwali. But mostly I am looking to not just improve my art skills but impress UNC with it because I have heard that to get in, you should to be good in every aspect including arts, athletics, and academics.

Classes (9th grade)
1st semester( my school has a block schedule):
World History Honors: A+
Art I: A+
Apparel Development: A
Geometry Honors: A+

2nd semester:
English I Honors: A+
Health/PE: A+
Spanish I: A+
Biology Honors: A+

10th grade
1st semester:
Art II: A (so far)
Chemistry Honors: A (so far)
Civics and Economics Honors: A+ (so far)
Algebra II Honors: A+(so far)

I am planning to take 3 or 4 AP classes next year and 4 AP classes senior year and keep getting straight A's. I also plan to take Spanish and Art all 4 years of my high school career.

Other:
I am in the Natural Science Academy, a program my school has which requires 7 sciences before you graduate. I also want to be a freshmen mentor next year and senior year, also a program my school has in which 11th and 12th graders help freshmen in their first year of high school.

So that's it. But I have so many questions. What should I improve in? Should I become an officer in a club and if so which club should I become an officer in? Should I take more AP classes? What should I do to make my art skills 'pop' to UNC? Do I need more ec's? Do I need more community service or volunteering to look good? And if so, what kind of volunteering should I do? Please, please, please help me, I know this is kind of early to think of applying to colleges but it's never too late! Please comment to answer my questions and thanks in advance!

If A+s are counted as 4 for UW purposes so I’ll go with 4, and A+s are counted as 4.3 for weighting, weighted GPA should be in the 4.10-4.20 range. So you’d have a chance if you scored 2000+ on the SAT (or 29+ on the ACT)

If you really need the feel to do community service, and if it’s even possible to do so using art skills in some capacity, please do so. As far as being an officer in clubs is concerned, you can take a pick; I don’t think it matters that much if you’re one but I’d take the one you’re most committed to.

I think that it is wonderful that your dream school is UNC Chapel Hill. I think you definitely have the capability of getting admitted there. BTW are you in state or OOS? For SATs, if you get over a 2100 I think you should be set for the school. Also, for community service, (I am assuming that you are Indian but please tell me if I am wrong) an option is to go on a volunteer trip to India. This sounds kind of intense but it is a wonderful opportunity to embrace your heritage and help others. I went on a volunteer trip this year to China and it was the best experience I have ever had. Good luck with everything, and I am sure you will get into an awesome college!

Way to early to give meaningful chances for UNC for soph. UNC very hard to get into OOS as it takes just 10% of students OOS (about some level of difficulty as Duke/Pomona for all students). If you continue with top grades (stay in top 2%) and get 2150 or more on SAT you have a good shot so long as you continue (beef up a bit) the ECs which look a bit sparse in numbers and/or achievements (colleges usually want one or the other, with the greater emphasis placed on achievements).

The OP said in-state so I’ll go with that assumption.

@muckdogs, I am in-state, I know it says california on my username but that’s just because I’m from California but currently I live in NC.

@collegebound, Thanks! I was actually thinking about doing something like that but I don’t know where to start! Any advice or websites for a program doing international volunteer trips like that would help!

@catria, Yeah I’m guessing my GPA is somewhere around that and I have a paper I got from school with my GPA, and everything on it but I lost it lol But thanks anyways!

Thought in state meant California. You are in good shape for UNC in state assuming decent SAT scores.

I honestly do not know where you should search since I am not from your area. Usually volunteer trips are conducted by churches or large non-profit organizations. My volunteer trip was trip was funded by a local Chinese organization, so I do not think sending you their information would benefit you much. Ask around your community. I am sure there ares some organizations you are not aware of.

I would say you have a very good shot if you keep it up!

@collegebound Thanks I’ll ask at my local Hindu temple and Indian community if their’s anything like that! Thanks!

I also don’t know if I should be president of a club, I have heard that 60 percent of UNC students were either captains, presidents, or founders of a club or sports team. I certainly do not have leadership potential or skills so I don’t know if not becoming president of a club will lower my chances of going to UNC, I don’t think I can be president but I might just be vice president of a club or something, like HOSA.
