CHANCE ME FOR UNC, UMICH, PURDUE, USC, UVA :))

Hi!

I'm a white (italian if that helps haha) female living in Texas. My parents both attended the University of Michigan, one parent in Engineering + Ross School of Business (BA) and the other an LSA major. I was born a wolverine and that is my top school, I'm applying early admission, and there are photos of me 1 month old in my Michigan cheerleader uniform at a football tailgate. No joke. I'm really hoping my parents being u of m grads helps me!

SAT: 1360 (680 r&w, 680 math) 6-5-7 essay. Planning on taking the SAT again in May to get a 1400.
GPA: 3.5 UW 4.3 W. 4.3 freshman year, 4.5 sophomore year, 4.2 junior year.
Rank: 32/720 (top 5% of class) I was ranked 16 until this year ://

APs: I have only taken honors and AP classes, including AP Bio, AP English Lang&Comp, and AP US History so far. My schedule for next year has AP Calculus BC, AP English Lit, AP Env. Science, AP Economics, and AP Government.

Extracurriculars: Dance has been my passion since I was young and it is my most defining extracurricular; I believe it will set me apart from most nerdy math types. I have won 7th and 4th place at regional competitions for my solos, and I have been a part of 3 different dance teams throughout HS: 1- Studio dance team of the best dancers in Austin where we competed and attended class from famous choreographers and traveled around the state of TX weekly, 2- Elite team of my school’s best 8 dancers, and 3- Statewide-known drill team that is practically a sorority (because of the togetherness) if I’m being honest. We practice before school every day for 3+ hours and attend and perform at every football game, perform at basketball games, compete statewide against other schools, and organize our own spring show. I have been given multiple solo opportunities and am one of the stand-outs on the team, which (IMPORTANT) has eaten into my time to study for tests and do homework. The drill team is the most time-consuming organization that my school has to offer but I’m looking forward to detailing in my essays how much this organization has changed me for the better B-)
*** aside from dance, I have very few other ECs but they include: Treasurer in my school’s Key Club, Spanish Honor Society, HOSA, Bowie Buddies (working with kids w/ disabilities), volunteering at my church’s VBS every year since 6th grade, and I work at a snow cone shack march-october.

THANKS FOR CHANCING ME! tell me what I should do to improve my chances for the remaining 2-ish months of high school and be honest! I know my gpa and sat are fairly average, but my passion and dancing ability and courseload will help me out.

wow a 3.5 uw is top 5%?

what major? If engineering or CS then low chances, if LSA then id say pretty good chances

I don’t think my school does unweighted gpa like most schools because I’ve only gotten 2 B’s in semesters

LSA! (bio/premed) thank you!!

uwGPA of 3.5 is pretty low for UMich. If you only have 2 Bs in your transcript, it is likely that you have mostly A-. Do recalculate your uwGPA without subgrade which is how the adcom at UMich do. For OOS students, you are looking at a pretty high CoA and a low admission rate (20-25%). I would suggest you to accept the automatic admission at UT Austin. Legacy does help, but your SAT score is currently a bit below the mid 50 at UMich last year (1440-1570). I do know someone got accepted by UM CoE from in state with right below the 25th percentile admission score with legacy.

@billcsho I’m not sure how my school calculates unweighted gpa, but I just calculated it with a B being a 3.0 and an A being a 4.0 and I have a 3.9 unweighted. I think that’s how Michigan does it. Also calculating my weighted the same way I have a 4.9… not sure if they do it that way. Well that’s good news if someone else with similar stats got in. I really don’t want to stay in Austin for UT but it honestly might be my best choice. Thank you so much!

That’s good for you with the recalculated uwGPA. As I mentioned above, that is the way they do it. GPA 3.9 would put you right above the 75th percentile. Your OOS status and weak SAT score would be your weakest links though. Legacy would help a little but there are also many applicants with legacy. Try to bring up your SAT score or try ACT (mid 50 30-34) to help your chance at UmIch.

That’s great! I appreciate your help  @billcsho
